Bound by Truth II - John McGrane

    Chapter One:

    ON PATMOS

    Revelation 1

The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants—things which must shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John,

²who bore witness to the word of God, and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, to all things that he saw.

³Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near.

⁴John, to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne,

⁵and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood,

⁶and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

⁷Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, says the Lord, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.

⁹I, John, both your brother and companion in the tribulation and kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was on the island that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.

¹⁰I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet,

¹¹saying, I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, and, What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia: to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.

¹²Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands,

¹³and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band.

    ¹⁴His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire;

    ¹⁵His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters;

¹⁶He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength.

¹⁷And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, "Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last.

¹⁸I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.

¹⁹Write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after this.

²⁰The mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands which you saw are the seven churches.

Can you imagine? John, the one whom Jesus loves, opens with a blessing upon us. How magnificently beautiful that even John cares for us so deeply that we should receive his blessing for reading this Word.

When Christ does come again even the dead in sin from the grave will see Him. They will have to await judgment, but they will see Him. His wonderous glory is so great that it penetrates all veils. Even the veil of Hades where the dead not in Christ abide.

Some have interpreted the Lord’s Day to mean something in relationship to the Sabbath or to the resurrection of Christ, but studies have uncovered a more likely option in that world, at that time and that it is a reference to the mandated worship of Caesar. A day set apart to worship Caesar as God, called the Lord’s Day.

As to Johns vision of Jesus in His glorified form, He, the Messiah of mankind, takes on this visage unto Daniel as well.

    Daniel 10

⁴ Now on the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was by the side of the great river, that is, the Tigris,

⁵I lifted my eyes and looked, and behold, a certain man clothed in linen, whose waist was girded with gold of Uphaz!

⁶His body was like beryl, his face like the appearance of lightning, his eyes like torches of fire, his arms, and feet like burnished bronze in color, and the sound of his words like the voice of a multitude.

The seven-candlesticks mentioned are seven Menorahs; a single candlestick with seven lamps each as depicted in scripture and found in the temple. Its likeness is used in millions of homes throughout the world today and is lit in recognition and remembrance of Gods appointed times.

    Exodus 25

³¹"You shall also make a lampstand of pure gold; the lampstand shall be of hammered work.

Its shaft, its branches, its bowls, its ornamental knobs, and flowers shall be of one piece.

³²And six branches shall come out of its sides: three branches of the lampstand out of one side,

and three branches of the lampstand out of the other side.

³³Three bowls shall be made like almond blossoms on one branch, with an ornamental knob.

and a flower, and three bowls made like almond blossoms on the other branch, with an ornamental knob and a flower—and so for the six

branches that come out of the lampstand.

³⁴On the lampstand itself four bowls shall be made like almond blossoms, each.

with its ornamental knob and flower.

³⁵And there shall be a knob under the first two branches of

    the same, a knob under

the second two branches of the same, and a knob under the third two branches of the same, according to the six branches that extend from the lampstand.

³⁶Their knobs and their branches shall be of one piece; all of it shall be one hammered piece of

    pure gold.

³⁷You shall make seven lamps for it, and they shall arrange its lamps so that they give light in

    front of it.

³⁸And its wick-trimmers and their trays shall be of pure gold.

³⁹It shall be made of a talent of pure gold, with all these utensils.

⁴⁰And see to it that you make them according to the pattern which was shown you on the mountain.

There is much about God and His ways we may never utterly understand in this life, but it is a devout love and comfort that He is constant in His ways and repetitive in His methods as with Zachariah.

    Zachariah 4

Now the angel who talked with me came back and wakened me, as a man who is wakened out of his sleep.

²And he said to me, What do you see? So I said, "I am looking, and there is a lampstand of solid gold with a bowl on top of it, and on the stand seven lamps with seven pipes to the seven lamps.

³Two olive trees are by it, one at the right of the bowl and the other at its left."

⁴So I answered and spoke to the angel who talked with me, saying, What are these, my lord?

⁵Then the angel who talked with me answered and said to me, Do you not know what these are? And I said, No, my lord.

⁶So he answered and said to me:

    "This is the word
