In the chapter, Revising in Joseph Harris book, Rewriting: How to Do Things with
Texts, published in 2006 he explains the importance of revising papers because this process can
expand the writer's paper and add another level of comprehension to it. Harris starts the chapter
off by giving the reader insightful questions such as; What is one's project?, What does one want
to accomplish?, How can one build on strengths of your drafts?, How might one acknowledge
other views and possibilities?, Whats next?, What are the implications of what one has to say?
Harris then elaborates by saying to think of these questions throughout the drafting process so
the reader can start thinking about what actually goes into writing a paper and the revising stage
instead of just trying to complete the paper. Harris stresses that revisiting your purpose of
writing throughout revising process allows the writer to come across more important ideas. This
strategy allows the writer to rephrase and reorganize their thoughts; therefore, the write can be
more open to new ideas and make add new research or analyses.
Harris also asserts that the reader should keep tracking their revisions by crossing out
what is no longer wanted and underlining what they want to add. According to Harris, using the
compare document tool can help the writer track changes they make to create a new version of
the draft. In addition, Harris explains the difference between editing and revising through using
the terms, global changes and local changes. In other words, global change consists of
changes to the argument that affects how the audience perceives the paper; whereas, local

changes do not make a big of difference such as spelling or punctuation. Finally, Harris suggests
when it comes to adding a counter argument the writer should create the draft in a way that it
will lead to other possible papers in the future. Overall, Harris helps writers understand the
importance of the revision process through methods and insight given in this chapter.
