4.6.2 Flow of condensate in pipes 4.7 Natural gas in pipes

The pressure drop of the condensate flow may be obtained
in the same way as for hot water where: 4.7.1 General
(a) thermostatic traps, having small pressure differen-
tials between inlet and outlet, are employed and It should be noted that gases are highly compressible and
that the density therefore varies considerably with pressure
(b) air and other gases are prevented from entering the and temperature. Although the viscosity varies little with
condensate drain by the use of automatic vents. pressure, that too varies with temperature. Thus pressure
drops are therefore best obtained by direct calculation
If air is required to traverse the condensate main and if using the method explained in section 4.3. Although sec-
flash steam is produced by the pressure drops in the trap tion 4.3 assumes incompressible flow (q constant), the
and system then the resistance is greatly increased. The method may be used with reasonable accuracy so long as
pressure drop in two-phase flow is always greater than for the drop in pressure along the pipe does not exceed 10 per
either phase individually, the calculation for which is cent of the initial (absolute) inlet pressure.
beyond the scope of this Guide. In the absence of definite
data it is recommended that where flash steam can occur
the condensate mains should be sized for three times the Nevertheless values have been calculated for a density q
normal hot water discharge. 0.68 kg m3 being reasonable for a pressure of 100 kPa and
a temperature of 10C. These are given in Table 4.45.

The table covers the regions of laminar and turbulent

flows. In the intermediate zone, 2000 Re 3000 the
nature of the flow is unpredictable and the pressure drop
similarly unpredictable. For Re 2000 turbulent flow has
been assumed in the calculation.
