Executive Summary
This report provides information on the current status of overall supply chain management
activities of GrameenPhone, a leading telecommunication service provider in Bangladesh.
GrameenPhone started its journey in Bangladesh back in 1997 and now came out to be one of the
market leader in telecommunication service provider, with over 45 million subscribers. The
goodwill and the brand perception GrameenPhone managed to establish avails the company for
expansion, and now the company also refers themselves as a digital company: a company with
several digital services.
As the company being saturated internally, with not only focused on the telecommunication, the
supply chain activities are also much distributed.
The overall supply chain activities of GrameenPhone is distributed and not distinctive, and this
report projects every of those workflow channels for every of those different GrameenPhone
services.
To summarize, this report is prepared with an aim to visualize every of those distributed
GrameenPhone Supply Chain activities.

Rationale of the Study


Businesses are often a part of a larger network of organizations and Supply Chain Network can
be used to highlight these interactions between organizations. Starting from the purchasing of
raw materials to manufacturing to distribution of the product to the customers and consumers all
are under the supervision of Supply Chain Department.
Similarly, GrameenPhone has its own Supply Chain Network through which it conducts all the
activities needed to produce a product within a specific time. GrameenPhone basically offers two
products- Prepaid and Postpaid. This study is based on two primary objectives from which we'll
get to know how well GrameenPhone manages the entire Supply Chain Network and the benefits
its been getting from this network.
Moreover, the study contributes to the level of professional development of the fresh graduates.
It will help the graduates to achieve long-term career aspirations in this field.

COMPANY OVERVIEW
GrameenPhone, widely known as GP is the leading telecommunications service provider in
Bangladesh. With more than 45 million subscribers, GrameenPhone is the largest cellular
operator in the country. It is a joint venture enterprise between Telenor and Grameen Telecom
Corporation, a non-profit sister concern of the internationally acclaimed microfinance
organization and community development bank Grameen Bank. When GrameenPhone started its
journey cell phone was a luxury product for everyone.
GP is best known for its service rather than its low tariff and value added services. GP believes
in service, a service that leads to good business and good development. Telephone helps people
work together, raising their productivity. This gain in productivity is development, which in turn
enables them to afford a telephone service, generating a good business. Thus development and
business go together.
Presently GP has covered 440 upazillas of 61 districts. 98% of the total population is under
coverage of GPs network. GP has so far invested more than BDT 15,900 crore to build the
network infrastructure.

Supply Chain Network


GrameenPhone strives for high standards of sustainability and continuous improvement in its
operations throughout the supply chain. Grameenphones Supplier Conduct Principles (SCP) are
based on internationally recognized standards, including requirements on human rights, health
and safety, labor rights, environment and anti-corruption. Endorsement of Supplier Conduct
Principles (SCP) is mandatory for all the suppliers and partners of Grameenphone entering in
contractual relationship. Grameenphones approach to supply chain sustainability is to legally
oblige the supplier to ensure responsible business practices, monitor compliance to
Grameenphones requirements and build capacity among suppliers.
In addition, supply chain sustainability also upholds Grameenphones Zero Tolerance Approach
on corruption with an aim to establish ethical and responsible business conduct in supply chain.
Partnership and mutual cooperation with suppliers is the key to achieve and establish social
compliance and ethical business practice in the supply chain. Telenor, the mother company of
Grameenphone, is an active member of the Joint Audit Cooperation (JAC), Child Labor Platform
and the Supply Chain Advisory Group of the UN Global Compact, as well as the Global e-
Sustainability Initiative (GeSI). All of the Business Units of Telenor across the world along with
Grameenphone are also committed to contribute in this field to create an impact globally as well
as on their respective local societies. Supply Chain Monitoring Grameenphone carries out
inspections in order to monitor compliance to the requirements on responsible business conduct.
In 2016, Grameenphone carried out 934 supplier inspections (ranging from simple site visits to
more comprehensive inspections or audits) across the value chain. 70 percent of the inspections
were carried out unannounced. 896 major non-conformities were identified during the
inspections. All major non-conformities are followed up with mitigation plans and processes on
closing of the non-conformities. Risk re-assessment and plans for preventing similar incidents
are already underway. Supply Chain Capacity Building the capacity of the suppliers in terms of
sustainability is one of the priorities of Grameenphone. In 2016, Grameenphone conducted a
total 3,284 man-hours of training and awareness for building the capacity of its suppliers and
partners including coaching, on-job hands-on training, video learning and one-one consultation.
Grameenphone also organized a program called, Annual Supplier Development Program 2016
where around 300 suppliers and partners of Grameenphone participated for a half day-long
audio-visual sustainability awareness program focusing on practical instances of health & safety,
anti-corruption, sustainability requirements as well as green telecom, women empowerment and
diversity, etc. Grameenphone is now emphasizing on industry and cross-industry collaborations
to synergize efforts in capacity building.
Supply Chain Sustainability is a key element of corporate governance and business strategy of
Grameenphone that strives for high labor standards and continuous improvement in its own
operations and throughout its entire supply chain. The aim of Grameenphone is to raise the
standards of social compliance and make a social impact in the local market. Grameenphone
ensures continual improvement of its suppliers in terms of sustainability and social compliance
with its effective sustainability operations that includes - (a) Endorsement of Supplier Conduct
Principle (b) Risk assessments (c) Supplier capacity building (d) Audits and inspections (e)
Control mechanism. All suppliers and contractors who have a direct contractual relationship with
Grameenphone and offer products or services to Grameenphone must adhere with the Company's
Supplier Conduct Principles (SCP). Monitoring compliance in relation to SCP is performed by
conducting systematic audits- inspections and followed by effective risk management. Any
identified gaps are shared with the respective supplier for the purpose of development. At the
same time, Grameenphone promotes responsible business conduct and anti-corruption in supply
chain with its Zero Tolerance Approach on corruption. Grameenphone believes that decent
working conditions, respect for human rights and the environment as well as willingness to
improve standards amongst our suppliers is the only viable route forward. By working together
with our suppliers, we can raise the bar and build a competitive edge.
Conclusion

Holding the leading position in the market, GrameenPhone refers a sustainable supply chain
network one of their key tool. The supply chain network of GrameenPhone is established
focusing on long term sustainability. Hence, the company rules and policies puts a guideline for
every of their activities including Supply Chain Management. This keeps on improving
workforce efficiency over time. GrameenPhone corporate activities including Supply Chain
Management empowers women, with keeping 27% of employees women. The supply chain
network of GrameenPhone is distributed and this report primarily focuses on presenting a supply
chain Management scenario of GrameenPhone. With limitation of information resources, the
report has certain limitations. However, this report projects a very clear scenario of
GrameenPhone Supply Chain Management.
