Experiment 1: Time Constant
Summary
Objectives
Theory
The thermal response is one of the key characteristics to consider when selecting the thermal
measuring device for a particular application. The thermal response is the time taken for the
time reading of the thermal measuring device to change by 63.2% of the step change. For any
given thermal measuring device the thermal response will be a constant value regardless of
the step change. Hence, thermal response is also known as Time Constant.

Procedure
1) The water pot is fill half full with room temperature water.
2) The cover of the hot water pot is closed to ensure the water can be cooked safely.
3) All of the thermal measuring device is put in place in the hot water pot.
4) The initial temperature of the water is measured by all of the thermal measuring device
and recorded.
5) The main switch is turned on along with the power to the hot water pot
6) The temperature of the water is recorded with a two minute interval
7) The experiment is stopped when all of the thermal measuring device gave a reading of 100
degree celcius.
