CONFIRMATION
Confirmation is about becoming a committed member of the local and worldwide Christian
family: it marks the point in the Christian journey at which you affirm for yourself the faith
into which you have been baptized and your intention to live a life of committed
discipleship. This affirmation is confirmed through prayer and the laying on of hands by the
confirming bishop. The Church also asks God to give you power through the Holy Spirit to
enable you to live in the way of Jesus.
The purpose of confirmation preparation is to ensure that those who are confirmed have a
proper understanding of what it means to live as a disciple of Christ within the life of the
Church of England. Preparation sessions encourage candidates to grow in their Christian
faith through prayer, reflection, studying the Bible, participating actively in the life of the
church and demonstrating

PILGRIMAGE AND SOCIAL AWARENESS TRIP TO PALESTINE 19 TH -26TH
FEBRUARY 2018
With The Revd Alison Askew and Canon Michael Glanville-Smith
On this seven night trip we will stay both in East Jerusalem and Beit Sahour (Bethlehem).
We will visit the main pilgrimage sites in and around Jerusalem and Bethlehem but will not
be going to Galilee. A significant part of the trip will involve learning about life in
Palestine, meeting local Christians and visiting various charitable projects. The cost of the
trip based on a group of 12 -14 will be 600 per person in a twin room and 785 in a single,
plus flights.

SAVE OUR SWIFTS: Meeting on Friday November 10th at 7.30 p.m. Come to the Town
Hall on November 10th at 7.00 for 7.30 p.m. to listen to Tanya and Edmund Hoare talking
about their passion for swifts. You will learn about the lives and travels of these amazing
and iconic birds, and they will give us a lot of practical ideas and advice on how to welcome
our returning swifts next May, with new nesting sites. You may wish to volunteer your
skills, or learn how to put up a nest box on your house. You might want to sponsor the
project, or help set up a local action group, or you may just come for a fascinating evening
and a glass of wine. Whatever your reason please come! Jeremy and Carla McCowen
THE WINTER STAR
St Nicholas Church, West Tanfield is planning a performance of The Winter Star on
Friday 8th December at 7.00 p.m. It is a work which includes everybody taking part,
starting with parents encouraging their children to go to sleep in preparation for Christmas
Day. A bright, shining star disturbs the childrens sleep and opens doors to the story of
The Nativity. A short piece in which everybody participates but we do need parents and
children. A rehearsal from 5.00 p.m. until 6.00 p.m will take place on Sunday 19 th
November in St Nicholas Church. Please join us.
1 THESSALONIANS 2: 9-13 You remember our labour and toil, brothers and sisters; we
worked night and day, so that we might not burden any of you while we proclaimed to you
the gospel of God. You are witnesses, and God also, how pure, upright, and blameless our
conduct was towards you believers. As you know, we dealt with each one of you like a
father with his children, urging and encouraging you and pleading that you should lead a
life worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory. We also constantly
give thanks to God for this, that when you received the word of God that you heard from us,
you accepted it not as a human word but as what it really is, Gods word, which is also at
work in you believers.
MATTHEW 24: 1-14 As Jesus came out of the temple and was going away, his disciples
came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. Then he asked them, You see all
these, do you not? Truly I tell you, not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be
thrown down.
When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying,
Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the
age? Jesus answered them, Beware that no one leads you astray. For many will come in
my name, saying, I am the Messiah! and they will lead many astray. And you will hear of
wars and rumours of wars; see that you are not alarmed; for this must take place, but the end
is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will
be famines and earthquakes in various places: all this is but the beginning of the birth pangs.
Then they will hand you over to be tortured and will put you to death, and you will be
hated by all nations because of my name. Then many will fall away, and they will betray
one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray.
And because of the increase of lawlessness, the love of many will grow cold. But anyone
who endures to the end will be saved. And this good news of the kingdom will be pro-
claimed throughout the world, as a testimony to all the nations; and then the end will come.
