Title of Lesson: Introduction to Divisibility

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills/Standards:

111.5. Grade 3, Adopted 2012.
(b) Knowledge and skills
(4) Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process
standards to develop and use strategies and methods for whole number
computations in order to solve problems with efficiency and accuracy. The
student is expected to:
(K) solve one-step and two-step problems involving multiplication
and division within 100 using strategies based on objects properties of
operations; or recall of facts.

Objective/Purpose: Introduce divisibility to the class with different medias and methods
to address several learning styles.

Introduce Lesson (Anticipatory Set 5-10 minutes): Have students move to the meeting
area in the center of the room (they know where to go and should be sitting on their
bottoms). Read The Great Divide: a Mathematical Marathon by Dayle Ann Dodds to
introduce the topic.

Example: The Division family will be the focus of the direct instruction and I encourage
the students to use the mnemonic DMSBR (Dad, Mom, Sister, Brother, Rover) to
remember the steps for dividing (Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down,
Repeat/Remainder). Equations used will be 44/4=11, 78/2=39, and 78/5=6R2.
Breakdown of Lesson:
Direct Instruction (10-15 minutes)- Use the laminated anchor chart I prepared,
titled The Division Family as pictured below:

Use dry erase markers/cleaning solvent located on the tray under the anchor chart
stand to write/erase the division facts as necessary. The 1st equation, 44/4=11 should be
solved step by step using the Division Family as a reference for order. The anchor
chart should look like the photo below when finished solving the equation 44/4=11.
Erase and repeat for the rest of examples given.
Guided Practice (15-20 minutes)- Group students into 5 groups (should be about
5 in each group) and give each group 1 laptop. Instruct students to go to
mathplayground.com. Students should work together to solve problems in any of the
following games:
Drag Race Division
Pony Pull Division
Demolition Division
Division Derby
Closure (about 5 minutes)- Have students sit in their desks with their math
spirals and a writing utensil out. Instruct students to write each division problem and its
solution as they come up in the video. Play the Division Song (should look like the photo
below)

Pause the video when word problems pop up during the song (times- 1:18 and
2:08). Each word problem should stay paused on the screen for 1 minute to ensure each
student has an opportunity to write the numeric equation and solution as this will be
their exit ticket for me to check when I return.
Independent Practice- Please send the worksheets from the folder on my desk
home with the students. Each student should receive 1 worksheet that is front and back,
and should look like one pictured below.
The worksheet is a blend of multiplication and division word problems as they are the
previous/current units we are working on. Students may work on the worksheet in class
if any time is left at the end of the block. Please inform students that this worksheet is
due by Friday.

Re-Teach- To re-teach this, I would divide the class into groups by understanding level
and have them cycle through a number of math stations to practice this skill. One of the
stations would include meeting with me (the teacher) to review this skill on varying
levels of difficulty depending on the groups abilities.
