Revision History
Each page of the document has the document part number and revision
letter at the bottom of the page. The revision letter changes whenever
the document is updated.
General
Solar 7000/8000/View Main code is compatible with previous versions of
the Main code. But previous versions are not necessarily compatible with
the newer versions. One area of incompatibility is monitor defaults.
Newer versions use the same monitor defaults as the older versions, but
they may also support additional monitor defaults.
Loading new Main code on top of older Main code is not a problem
because the additional monitor defaults are appended to the existing set
of defaults. But loading older Main code on top of newer Main code does
not generally work because the new Main codes defaults may not be
compatible with the older Main codes defaults.
127(
Throughout this document, Boot Loader is used to refer to the Boot
code software.
&$87,21
There may be temporary losses of monitoring functions
throughout parts of the system until you finish the
conversion. The staff should be prepared to cover these
periods of lost monitoring.
127(
Downgrading software in GE Medical System Information
Technologies products may result in Year 2000 (Y2K) compliance
issues. Even though a product may be Year 2000 compliant on a
stand-alone basis, networking issues (product compatibility) may
require an update to a different version so that you can continue to
use your product in the manner in which it was designed to be used.
Check the Boot Loader version at the top of the screen. Its version must
correspond to the version of Main code CURRENTLY loaded, even if you
intend to download different Main code. If the Boot Loader is not the
correct version, then download the correct version before you proceed.
Use the following chart to determine if the boot loader is the correct
version.
&$87,21
The Boot Loader must match the corresponding version
of Main code even though both may be changed in the
steps that follow.
Use the chart below if you see the message Unknown flash type. Cannot
access flash.

Materials Required
This conversion procedure requires the user to have the following:
n PC or PC laptop to download the software with the following
minimum requirements:
u MS-DOS compatible,
u 1.44M, 3.5-inch diskette drive, and
u RS232 serial port;
Interconnection
Connect the PC to the Solar monitor by following these steps:
n Connect the monitor cable assembly to the 9-pin D-type connector
labeled ASYNC COMM at the rear of the monitor.
n Connect the other end of the monitor cable assembly to the RS-232C
to RS-422 converter.
127(
The RS-232C to RS-422 converter is powered by the monitor and

PC Software Diskettes
The monitor Update Diskette Kit consists of six diskettes.
n Diskettes 1, 2, and 3 are not intended for use with the laptop PC.
They contain the complete NETWORK update software files that are
used to update the monitor from the central station. Refer to the
Network Downloading presented later in this chapter.
n Diskette 4 contains software for the Boot Loader and part 1 of the
main processor code.
n Diskette 5 contains software for part 2 of the main processor code.
n Diskette 6 contains software for part 3 of the main processor code
and software labeled as Rac DAS, Rac COMM and remote control,
Tram-net Interface Adapter (TIA), and Octanet (Solar software
version 5A or later ONLY).
PC Setup
Follow the steps in the order listed.
3. Type UPDATE and press the ENTER key on the PC to list the Tram
Critical Care Monitor UPDATE UTILITIES menu.
4. Press the F2 key on the PC to select the UPDATE BEDSIDE menu.
Messages at the display tell you how the update is going. Watch the
RECEIVED bytes advance and the PC status window of bytes SENT.
Part 1 of the main code takes approximately five minutes.
When part 1 of the main code is updated, the bytes RECEIVED stops
and part 2 of the main code file name appears at the monitor with the
statement: INITIALIZING The PC status window should read
100% for bytes SENT.
Messages at the display tell you how the update is going. Watch the
RECEIVED bytes advance.
If your softwares main code is only TWO parts, when the main code
is updated the screen flashes and the monitor reboots into
monitoring mode.
If your softwares main code has THREE parts, when part 2 of the
main code is updated, the bytes RECEIVED stops and part 3 of the
main code file name appears at the monitor with the statement:
INITIALIZING The PC status window should read 100% for bytes
SENT.
If the file name from the PC does not match the file name residing in
the monitor, the monitor displays an error message and cannot
proceed. Press the ESC key to abort and select the correct file at the
PC. Select YES at the monitor to continue.
Messages at the display tell you how the update is going. Watch the
RECEIVED bytes advance. When the main code is updated, the
screen flashes and the monitor reboots into monitoring mode.
&$87,21
Do NOT reboot or power down the monitor while
downloading the boot loader. This renders the monitor
useless.
If the file name from the PC does not match the file name residing in
the monitor, the monitor displays an error message and cannot
proceed. Press the ESC key to abort and select the correct file at the
PC. Select YES at the monitor to continue.
If you are requested to download the checksum file (CS) after loading
the boot loader, continue with these steps:
127(
This method can only be used for converting monitors that are
connected to a patient monitoring network. If the monitor requiring
update is not connected to the network or is connected to a network
without central stations, this procedure cannot be used for
converting the monitor. Refer to PC/PC Laptop Download
Procedure for an alternate procedure.
Diskettes 1, 2, and 3 are not intended for use with the laptop PC. They
contain the complete NETWORK update software files that are used to
update the monitor from the Centralscope central station or Clinical
Information Center (CIC).
n Diskette 1 contains software for the boot loader and part 1 of the
main processor code.
n Diskette 2 contains software for part 2 of the main processor code.
n Diskette 3 contains software labeled as Rac DAS, Rac COMM,
remote control, Tram-net Interface Adapter (TIA), and Octanet
(version 5A or later).
Copy Files
The following steps describe how to copy files from update diskettes 1, 2,
and 3 onto the Centralscope central station or CIC system hard disk
drive. The Centralscope central station or CIC system acts as a file
server for downloading software files to the monitor over the patient
monitoring network.
Choose Procedure
Perform the procedure for your system (Centralscope Central Station
or Clinical Information Center (CIC)). After you have copied the
diskettes to your system, go to Download Files to the Monitor.
127(
CIC cannot be used to download boot code or main code of version 3
or prior.
127(
The central station may display status messages other than those
described in these instructions. If, after waiting at least 20 minutes,
the floppy ejects and diskette 2 is requested to be inserted, continue
with the next step. Otherwise, you need to reboot the central station
and start over from step 1.
LOADING SV DISK 02 OF 03
Where SV is the software version you are installing on the monitor.
SETUP CIC
Select SERVICE PASSWORD (tab on Setup window)
Type password: mms_com (lowercase with underscore)
Press the ENTER key.
2. Type the following in the popup window with ^ representing a
space. In place of <version>, type the version of software desired.
A:\CINSTALL^<version>
127(
If you insert the wrong diskette, or type in the wrong version
number, the screen displays an Incorrect Disk error message. Press
[CTRL] [C] to restart the procedure.
The Clinical Information Center (CIC) loads and prompt you for
diskettes two and three.
3. The Clinical Information Center (CIC) display indicates when the
download is complete with the message:
&$87,21

Troubleshooting
Download Problems
Do the following if problems arise while performing this update.
n If in doubt, call your sales or service representative for update kit
part numbers and compatibility issues.
n You can verify the monitor is on the network by selecting LIST
NETWORK from the SERVICE MONITOR menu of the central
station or CURRENT TELEMETRY LISTINGS from the SERVICE
menu of the CIC system.
If the above does not correct the problem, call Technical Service at
1-800-558-7044 for further assistance.
