TUTORIAL 4

QUESTION 1

a) Discuss the meaning of over reinforced and under reinforced concrete design.

b) Figure Q1 (a) shows a continuous beam of 5m length for each span. Total dead load acting on
the beam is 3.5 kN/m (excluding selfweight and brick wall) and characteristic imposed load of
1.5 kN/m. Figure Q1 (b) shows the beam section with reinforcement details. Using the
following data:

Density of concrete = 25 kN/m3

Density of brick wall = 22 kN/m3
Brick wall thickness = 115 mm
Exposure condition = moderate
Fire resistance = 2 hours
fck = 30 N/mm2
fyk = 500 N/mm2
Brick wall height = 2.75 m

Check whether the given reinforcements as in Figure Q1 (b) are adequate in bending in
resisting the maximum positive moment.
QUESTION 2

Figure above shows a plan view of a school building. The beam and slab is
constructed integrally and the slab spans 3 x 8 m each. Prepare a complete main
reinforcement design of beam 2/A-D.

Design data:
Slab thickness = 125 mm
Loads from finishes, partitions etc. = 15 kN/m
Characteristic live load, qk = 10 kN/m
Nominal cover, c = 25 mm
Concretes characteristic strength, fck = 30 N/mm2
Steel characteristic strength (main), fyk = 500 N/mm2
Beam size, bw x h = 250 x 450 mm

Assume link diameter = 10 mm

Bar diameter = 20 mm
