personality and formidable organizational skills, has recently had
her share of good surprises.
In May, she received a letter and a plaque from President Obama
for the Presidents Volunteer Service Award honoring her 7,000-plus
hours of service with several organizations, including Girl Scouts of
Michigan Shore to Shore, Toys for Tots, Coats for Kids and Special
Olympics. The accolade recognizes contributions in education,
mentoring, coaching, leadership and improving the economic
health of the community.
Rosie said the award validated her personal growth and her
desire to demonstrate the power of volunteer service.
Its important to me that other people know that they can
change the world by volunteering, she said. I love the quote,
Think globally, and act locally. We must get better; we need to
teach people to fish instead of catching the fish and feeding it to
them.
Rosie grew up near Lake City with her parents, two brothers and
two sisters. She learned about kindness at an early age from her
mother.
We were poor but we didnt know it, she said. The people
down the road were poorer and my mom said we had to be kind
and caring to them. She was always giving things to people who
didnt have anything.
Rosie remembers a life-changing event that influenced her
compassionate spirit.
When I was 5, our house burned down and they had a fire
shower for us. Everybody brought stuff they didnt need because
we had lost everything. I remember this lady brought a baby doll Courtesy photo

and said, My daughter is all grown up and is too busy to take care
of her doll. Would you take care of her? I still have that doll.
Rosies outgoing personality blossomed. She remembers having
lots of friends among the 42 students in her Lake City High School
graduating class.
Ive always been interested in a lot of things. Im a nurturer, I m
a fixer. I wasnt one of the cool kids, but I was friends with every-
body. Some of us still get together just to catch up, she said.
Rosie left Lake City in 1967, moved to Lansing with a dear friend,
taking a job at Michigan National Bank.
I wanted to go to college and become an English teacher but
nobody encouraged me, she said.
Rosie married, moved to California, then back to Michigan in
1972, eventually settling in Flushing. Along the way she had three
daughters, Kristen, Katie and Karen, and was a stay-at-home mom
for 10 years.
Because I didnt have a degree, I couldnt find job that would
pay me more than I had to pay a babysitter, she said. So with my
girls it was not if you are going to college, its where you are going
to college.
The girls did go to college and now have successful careers and
families of their own in Gaylord.
They all came home, Rosie said. The defining point of my life
has been being a mother.
In 1982, Rosie moved to Gaylord and found her place in the
world.

Rosie said Gaylord is her adopted hometown.
Our community has embraced me and has given me the op-
portunity to hone my skills of organization, she said. The support
has been beyond compare. This community helping neighbor.
Rosie compared Gaylord to a colorful piece of mosaic art.
The little pieces of glass come from all over, but we have one
thing that holds us all together, and I think that it is respect. I be-
lieve that we should respect the dignity of every being.
After becoming a single mom, Rosie took a job as a special-ed-
ucation paraprofessional with the Cheboygan-Otsego Presque Isle
Educational Service istrict. She worked with severely cognitively
impaired and also hearing-impaired students, and later added
substitute bus driving to her list of duties.
Rosie showed her own daughters the importance of partici-
pating in the community. She signed on to become a Girl Scout
leader.
They told me If you dont become a leader, little Kristen cant
become a Girl Scout because we dont have a leader in Gaylord,
Rosie said
In 1983, Rosie directed the Girl Scout day camp for the first time
and continued in that role for 20 years. She said there are thou-
sands of young women who have been touched by the camp.
We grew to 300 people a day; 200 girls and 100 adults. We had
a blast, she said.
Rosie said this was a time in her life when set met other
like-minded people who, like her, cared about children.
There were so many, she said. They mentored me. So rather Courtesy
