Objectives:

To understand patterns within a periodic table.

To be able to figure out how soluble alkaline earth salts are.
To figure out 4)how strong the oxidation of halogens is.
To identify unknown alkaline earth halides

Methods:

1. Determining Solubility of Alkaline Earth Salts using Microscale

a. Drop four (4) drops of 0.1M Ba(NO3)2 (barium nitrate) in wells A1 through A4 on
the plastic well plate using a pipette.
b. Drop four (4) drops of 0.1M Ca(NO3)2 (calcium nitrate) in wells B1 through B4
with a pipette.
c. Drop four (4) drops of 0.1M Sr(NO3)2 (strontium nitrate) In wells C1 through C4
with a pipette.
d. In every well from A1 through D1, drop four (4) drops of 1M H2SO4 (sulfuric acid)
using a pipette.
e. In every well from A2 through D2, drop four (4) drops of 1M Na2CO3 (sodium
carbonate).
f. In every well from A3 through D3, drop four (4) drops of 0.25M (NH4)2C2O4
(ammonium oxalate)
g. In every well from A4 through D4, drop four (4) drops of 0.1M KIO3 (potassium
iodate)
h. Make sure to empty out waste in appropriate waste bins and wash materials
thoroughly.
2. Determining Solubility of Alkaline Earth Salts using Miniscale
a. Determining Hexane Solution of Halogen Colors
i. Record colors after mixing a solution. Using a pipette, drop 15 drops of
aqueous bromine and 15 drops of hexane with a Pasteur pipette in the
test tube labeled Br2
ii. Record colors after mixing a solution. Using a pipette, add 15 drops of
aqueous chlorine and 15 drops of hexane with a Pasteur pipette in the
test tube labeled Cl2
iii. Record Colors after mixing a solution. Using a pipette, drop 15 drops of
aqueous iodine and 15 drops of hexane using a Pasteur pipette in the test
tube labeled I2
b. Finding reactions in Halogens and Halides
i. After lining up the test tubes in three rows labeled Br/Br2/, Br/Cl2, Br/I2,
then Cl-/Br2, Cl-/Cl2, Cl-/I2, then I-/Br2, I-/Cl2, I-/I2, drop 15 drops of 0.1M
NaBr and 15 drops of hexane in the first row.
ii. Drop 15 drops of 0.1M NaCl and 15 drops of hexane in the second row
iii. Drop 15 drops of 0.1M NaI and 15 drops of hexane in the third row.
iv. Drop two (2) to three (3) drops for aqueous bromine in the first row, then
immediately cork and mix the mixture in a vortex chamber. Record the
colors.
v. Drop 15 drops for aqueous chlorine in the second row, then immediately
cork and mix the mixture in a vortex chamber. Record the colors.
vi. Drop 15 drops for aqueous iodine in the third row, then immediately cork
and mix the mixture in a vortex chamber. Record the colors
3. Identifying the Alkaline Earth Halide Salt Unknown
a. Record the formula name and the cation and anion present. Describe the
process then have it signed off by an instructor or TA.
