ANGELES, Marison C.

Group 04

Engr. Jose V. Hernandez

Instructor
OBJECTIVES:
1. To be able to make a dust pan.
2. To familiarize the students to use a bending machine.
3. To apply other methods of bending.
4. To enable the students to know other types of hand tools.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS:

Proper utilization and standardization of cutting commercial size of tin sheet
that is a significant factor in cost reduction of any project. Have knowledge of
working with plan and layout in order to produce a good quality project.

MATERIALS:
1 piece 12 inches x 12 inches tin sheet
1 piece 28 inches x 1 inches x 5/8-inch wood
2 pieces of blind rivet for riveting

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

Backsaw
Bender
Crosscut Saw
Drill Press (Drill bit size: 1/8 inch)
Flat File
Hammer
Mallet
Permanent Marker
Plane
Riveter
Tin Snip
PROCEDURES:
1. Trace the pattern drawn on the folder to the tin sheet using marker.
2. Cut the pattern using tin snips.
3. Study the pattern and study on how you will fold each side.
4. Use the bender to bend each side according to pattern, some patterns may
need to be fully bent and some are half bent.
5. For some sides, you will need to manually bend and shape it. Use mallet,
and the table vise for easier and faster work.
6. For the handle of dustpan, prepare a 28 by 1 by 5/8 inch piece of wood.
7. Taper one end of the handle to 14 by by 1/8 inch.
8. Smoothen the handle using a flat file (smooth).
9. On the opposite end, cut a midsection with a depth of 2 inches.
10. Drill 2 holes for the attachment of dustpan to the handle, using a drill
press with 1/8 inch diameter drill bit.
11. Drill another hole on the upper part of the handle.
12. Attach the handle to the metal sheet using a riveter.

QUESTIONS:
1. What is a tin snip?
Tinsnips are designed to cut and trim sheet metal and other thin yet
tough materials. Sheet metal can come in a variety of shapes and sizes and
so tin snips are useful for cutting the sheet metal to the desired
measurements.

2. Why is there a need of clipping the edges of the dust pan?

The edges of the dust pan needed the clipping of edges to remove the
sharpness of it and to prevent harm (usually cuts) to the user or consumer.
3. Is there a need of flaring out the front side of the dust pan?
The flare is needed for easier collecting of dust in the dustpan.

4. To avoid breaking out the wood edge while riveting, what is the best thing
to do?
To avoid breakage, it is recommended that the wood must be placed
in a flat surface and then pressure will be applied.

5. Why do you use a mallet in pounding a G.I. sheet?

Using mallet in pounding a G.I sheet may shape the G.I sheet in
desired form without damaging it.

6. How many 12 inches by 12 inches G.I. sheet can you cut out of a 4 feet by
8 feet standard G.I. sheet?
If the (4 feet x 8 feet) G.I. sheet was cut precisely with no errors, then
32 (12 inches x 12 inches) G.I. may be obtained from it.

7. Name two other ways for bending G.I. sheet.

The two alternative ways are using a grinder and a roll bender.

8. What will happen when you attach a longer handle to the dust pan?
A longer handle causes higher strain that may result to breaking.

9. Why is there a need to taper the handle?

Tapering the handle may result to a comfortable handling,
lightweight, and remove sharp edges of the wood handle.
10. What is the use of a flat nose vise grip?
A flat nose vice grip is used for holding flat surfaces together with
sufficient pressure, to stabilize the project while you are working on it.

DISCUSSION:
A dustpan is a common cleaning utensil that is commonly used in combination
with a broom or long brush. The dustpan was invented by an African American
named Lloyd P. Ray from Seattle, Washington, in 1882. Dustpans are usually shaped
like a square or a rectangle.
A handle is attached to one side so the dustpan can be held in place or picked
up easily. Some dustpans are small and handheld. Others are designed to be used
while standing; this version has a long pole attached, so no bending is required. Most
dustpans are made of tough, flexible plastic or durable metal. Dustpans are used to
pick up piles of dirt after sweeping. They can be used inside or outdoors.
CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATION:
This experiment enables the students to be more familiar to the tools
that will be used for further shop activities. Tools such as bending machine, riveter,
and etc. Also, this experiment enables the students to make a dust pan using the
materials indicated at the laboratory manual. Through the experiment, students will
encounter the other methods of bending. Finally, this experiment enables students to
use different kinds of hand tools.
I would recommend to consume the time properly by having proper
communication to each teammates and divide each part simultaneously. This would
result to a faster and more successful product. Also, students would need to be more
careful in every part since some tools would be used for the first time. Also, the
metal tin sheet have sharp edges, and may cause accidents, so students would need
to be more careful on tracing the pattern, cutting, and bending.
