Board's representative to the sub-
board of Pediatric Endocrinology and
to the American Board of Surgery. He
was elected vice-president of the
Board and began serving in this office
on January 1, 1987. He is the first and
only black member of the Board.
It is evident that Dr. Jenkins' con-
tributions to pediatrics and academic
pediatrics have not slowed; his efforts
are continuing to benefit the children
of this nation. His colleagues and ad-
mirers look forward to his future ac-
complishments in pediatrics at the
national level. His involvement in the
Washington Affiliate of the Black
Child Development Institute points
toward future accomplishments for
black children at the community level
as well.
Three children were born to Dr.
Jenkins and his first wife, Elizabeth,
a nurse, who died in 1974 after 25
years of marriage. He subsequently
met and married his present wife,
Maria, an economist and statistical
analyst, who brought three childrn
from her previous marriage into his
life. Together they have made a warm
and gracious home for their com-
bined families, and their children,
now grown, have presented them with
seven grandchildren.

Pocket Manual of Basic Surgical
Skills. Charles W. Van Way and
Charles A. Buerk, with illustrations by
F. Dennis Giddings, CV Mosby, St.

This manual, a revision of the ear-
lier text Surgical Skills in Patient
Care, was written by two general sur-
geons. It presents methods that both
reflect proper technique and practi-
cality. Though directed toward med-
ical students, junior surgical residents,
and nonsurgical clinicians, the senior
resident or attending surgeon who in-
frequently performs many of these
minor procedures will find it a quick
refresher.
The thrust of the manual is to fa-
miliarize those individuals who are
either unfamiliarwith, orinfrequently
perform intubations, vascular cathe-
terizations, wound care, drainage of
body cavities, biopsies, or suturing
with the appropriate indications and
techniques. The line drawings that
highlight the text are effective, pre-
senting clear and uncluttered illus-
trations of the discussed techniques.
Included are the all-important dis-
cussions on recognition and manage-
ment of complications subsequent to
these procedures. In a thorough and
concise fashion, the manual is a suc-
cessful reference for techniques, and
the pocket-sized format increases its
usefulness.
Of the 15 chapters, the strongest are
"Care of the Acute Wound," "Intra-
venous Techniques," "Arterial Tech-
niques," "Biopsy Techniques,"
"Drainage of Body Cavities," and
"Airway Management." These chap-
ters cover the material that should be

basic to all physicians, and the ma-
terial is presented in a practical "how-
to" fashion. The diagrams in these
sections are among the best in the
text, and those included in the sec-
tions on intravenous techniques and
drainage of body cavities are exem-
plary for proper positioning, acquir-
ing landmarks, and choosing the an-
gle of approach to the patient.
The senior surgical resident or at-
tending surgeon may already have
their preferred techniques for the
procedures discussed in this manual.
For those that do not, however, and
all others, including medical students,
junior surgical residents, nonsurgical
residents and attendings, this manual
is recommended.

As a well-written and well-illus-
trated reference on imaging in the
management of infertility, this book
is a worthwhile addition. Any radiol-
ogist, gynecologist, urologist, or resi-
dent in training who is interested in
this subject will find this book ap-
pealing.
The pertinent aspects of reproduc-
tive anatomy, physiology, and em-
bryology are presented in a logical and
succinct fashion. The sections that
