ABSTRACT

This experiment aims to determine the levels of vitamin C in the IPI Vitamin C. The
method used is Iodimetric titration with the principle of redox titration. Starch was added
to the samples that act as an indicator. The sample is titrated with I2(Iodine), which ended
with the onset of the color blue in the sample. From the experimental results and the
discussion that has been done, it can be concluded that (1) the mass of vitamin C in one
tablet is 47.9177 mg Vitamin C IPI grading 94.42% per caplet.

Key words: Iodimetric, iodine, redox titration, starch, vitamin C.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION
In everyday life people need carbohydrates, proteins, fiber, fats, vitamins and minerals.
One that plays an important role for the body is vitamins which include vitamins A, B, C,
D, E, and K.

This time we will discuss about Vitamin C. vitamin is not just energy, but vitamin do
regulator function (regulator) which cooperate with enzyme in reaction of biochemistry.
Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is a valuable component in food because it is useful as an
antioxidant and contains medicinal properties.

Vitamin C is generally found only in vegetable and fruits such as oranges, pineapples,
papaya, tomatoes and garlic.

METHODOLOGY
The method used is to conduct quantitative experiments in the laboratory. The
experiments were conducted in Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, Chemistry Analysis
Department, Thirteen Vocational High School Bandung, on Tuesday, November 17,
2016. The tools used in the experiment were Erlenmeyer flask 250 mL; beaker glass 100
mL; dropper pipette; stative and clamps; burette; funnel; measuring cup; mortar and
pestle; and watch glass.

The material used is vitacimin;

1. IPI VitaminC; iodine solution 0.1 N.
2. 1%; indicator of starch; and aquadest.

The working procedure of this experiment is as follows.

1. Weigh 20 vitamin C tablets equivalent to 250-300 mg of vitamin C.
2. Insert into a sharpened Erlenmeyer flask.
3. Add 25 mL of aquadest and 2 mL of 1% starch.
4. Titrate with standard I2 solution to the end point of clear blue color.

RESULTS AND FINDINGS

This practice aims to determine the levels of vitamin C in IPI Vitamin C. The method
used is titration of Iodimetric with redox titration principle. Step the first thing to do is
sample preparation. Solid IPI Vitamin C samples were mashed using mortar and pestle.
One tablet of Vitamin C IPI has a weight of 0.2514 grams. After smoothing, 1.2570
grams of powdered sample is dissolved with 25 mL of aquadest. The sample after
dissolving is yellow (Picture 1).

Picture 1. The sample before being titrated is yellow.

After the sample preparation is completed, Iodimetric titration of the sample is then done.
A total of 1.2570 grams of sample is fed into Erlenmeyer flask, then add 25 mL of
aquadest. Then added 3 drops of starch. Each sample was titrated using solution I2. The
titration process is terminated after the solution changes color to blue (Picture 2).

Picture 2. The solution is blue at the end point of the titration.

DISCUSSION
In this experiment, determination of the level of vitamin C was done by Iodimetric
method. Iodimetric is a direct titration and is a quantitative determination or
determination method where the basis of the determination is the amount of I2 that reacts
with the sample or is formed from the reaction between the sample and the iodide ion. In
redox reactions, there must always be oxidizing and reducing agents, because when an
element increases its oxidation number (releasing electrons), there must be an element
which oxidation number is reduced or decreased (electron capture).

The sample used in this experiment was vitamin C under the IPI brand. The indicator used
is the starch indicator. Starch is used because it will form a dark blue amorphous iod
complex even though the concentration of I2 is very small.

At the time of titration, I2 will be reduced to I- because it reacts with vitamin C which
causes the brown-colored color to become clear. Then after all vitamin C reacts with I2,
the excess I2 will react with the starch to form a blue complex that signifies the endpoint
of the titration.

CONCLUSIONS
From the experimental results and the discussion that has been done it can be concluded
(1) the average weight of vitamin C in a vitamin C IPI is 47.2107 mg.

RECOMMENDATIONS
Experiment should be done thoroughly and carefully especially in terms of keeping the
bottle of vitamin C that will be used in the experiment so that it will not be oxidized.
