Export Diversification in the Context of Bangladesh

Abstract

The intended research will be based on the situation and the prospects of export diversification
in the perspective of Bangladesh. Even though Bangladesh is a developing country, the export
basket of Bangladesh has been more or less constant over the years. Moreover, the country has
not expanded its reach of export. Export growth is directly linked to the economic growth of a
country, and hence, Bangladesh should devise an effective strategy to diversify export. The
research will be conducted with the objective of identifying the significance of export
diversification in the context of Bangladesh. Prior studies have been conducted on this topic,
but there exists no relevant literature on why the strategies taken by the government for
export diversification are failing. In order to identify the factors behind this, the research will
focus on the economy of Bangladesh and its International Business and the research will be
done basing on secondary data. Both descriptive and inferential statistical tools will be used for
the purpose of the study. The research is expected to identify the challenges to export
diversification and the prospects. In order to sustain the economic growth, the country should
focus on export diversification.
Purpose of the Study

The economy of Bangladesh has been facing trade deficit for years. Bangladesh has a potential
to diversify its trade relations and export and achieve a high export growth, resulting in higher
economic growth. This study aims to evaluate the validity of these concepts.

Significance of the Study

Bangladesh is a developing country and hence a growth in export is very essential in the context
of the present economy. This research can help identify the major challenges to export
diversification, the factors behind the failure of strategies taken so far and open doors for
generating new ideas that might solve the problem.

Problem Statement of the Study

A countrys export is very important for the balance of trade. Bangladesh has been facing a
trade deficit. The export basket of the country is not very diversified, neither is export
diversified geographically over the years. The Government of Bangladesh has formulated
various strategies for export diversification over the years but they have failed to achieve the
requisite level of export diversification due to various factors and challenges.

Literature Review
Benefits of the Study

The research will provide insights into the situation and prospect of export diversification in
Bangladesh, and help devise a strategy that will be effective. This will impact the economy of
the country through growth in exports and minimization of risks.
Objectives

To Identify the Prospects of Export Diversification in the Economy of Bangladesh


1. To evaluate the current scenario of export diversification in Bangladesh
2. To identify the impact of export diversification in the economy

Methodology

Study Area: The research will focus on the entire economy of Bangladesh, specifically the
export economy.
Target Population: The target population will include the export data of Bangladesh.
Sample Design: Since the research focuses on export diversification, hence there can be no
sample. The entire economy needs to be taken into consideration. So, no sampling technique
will be used.
Data and Data Sources: The data used in this research will be secondary in nature. The data will
be collected from the websites of the Ministry of Commerce, Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics,
Bangladesh Bank, World Bank Online Database and from various published journals and
articles.
List of Variables: The variables that will be used in conducting the research are:
1. Total export volume
2. Export volume by product
3. Number of export items
4. Foreign Direct Investment
5. Export Income
6. Entry/exit of export items
7. GDP
8. GDP growth
9. Trade Deficit
Qualifications of Key Persons

I, Shaoli Mahjabin, am a student currently in my 6th semester studying BBA at the Bangladesh
University of Professionals. Since I am studying under Bachelors of Business administration, this
is a relevant field for me and I am highly interested in conducting a research on this topic.

Educational Qualification:
HSC- Passed in 2014 under Science with a grade of GPA 5.00 from Adamjee Cantonment
College, Dhaka
SSC- Passed in 2012 under Science with a grade of GPA 5.00 from Shaheed Bir Uttam Lt. Anwar
Girls College, Dhaka

Achievements:
Successfully completed the Building Bridges Through Leadership Training (BBLT-14) from
Bangladesh Youth Leadership Center.
