he University of Liverpool, in partnership with Laureate
Online Education, offers all of its programmes in a
100% online e-learning environment. This means
that as a student of our programmes, not only should you
have a sound knowledge of the academic skills required
to undertake online study at an advanced level, but also
the necessary support and technical ability to be able
to follow and participate in your online classroom.
The Centre for Student Success offers all students a wide
variety of skills modules (academic and technical) and support
services that can enhance and develop your academic and study
skills to help you succeed in your postgraduate programme.
At the Centre for Student Success, we offer
a range of essential support services:
• Student Readiness Orientation and Foundations
for Academic Success modules: prepares you
for the online learning experience
• Student Support Managers: receive support with all
aspects of your study, from academic planning and
procedures to personal support and motivation
• Skills tutors: benefit from the expertise of our experienced
tutors to develop your study and academic skills
• Topical webinars: learn more information on
topics such as time management and how to make
the most out of your learning experience
• Study and academic skills modules: participate in
optional online modules and improve academic
performance for those who want to strengthen study
and academic skills. Initial modules offered in 2010 are:
»»Skills for Academic Integrity: »
This module is designed to provide students with the
practical skills needed to contribute academic work that
complies with the University of Liverpool’s policy on
citation and referencing. Topics include definitions of
academic integrity, plagiarism, collusion and fabrication
of data. Students will practise citing, referencing,
paraphrasing and quoting sources in the appropriate
citation style. Upon completion, students will be able
to demonstrate an improved ability to write in a
manner that correctly acknowledges the source of all
their contributions to the class, thus allowing them to
demonstrate clearly their own original contribution.
»»English for Academic Purposes: »
This module is designed to strengthen international
students’ academic writing skills. Special emphases
include composition, the writing process and English-
language grammatical issues. Cultural assumptions behind
approaches to academic writing are also addressed.
Readings, discussions and assignments are planned to
build and strengthen appropriate citation, summary,
drafting and revision skills according to University of
Liverpool policies and guidelines. These projects will allow
students to hone their analytical and writing skills and to
communicate effectively in their programmes of study.
»»Academic Writing: Structure and Style»
This module is designed for students to enhance their
ability to succeed in the University of Liverpool’s writing-
intensive modules. For postgraduate-level composition,
students must be able to paraphrase, summarise and
evaluate peer-reviewed research while using proper
grammar and punctuation. Through prewriting,
drafting and revising, students will practice the written
communication and critical thinking skills necessary
to successfully compose module assignments, respond

»»Academic Writing: Research and Argument»
This module is designed to help students develop the
skills necessary to complete postgraduate-level writing
assignments, including essays and module projects.
Students will analyse, synthesise, interpret and evaluate
primary research in order to present a written argument
in a final essay. Students will also gain practice evaluating
counterarguments and integrating them into their work.
Through peer critique and revision exercises, students will
gain tools to compose effective scholarly arguments.

Finally the orientation ensures you have an overview of the
rules regarding quotation and citation – essential to any
postgraduate study, whether online or campus-based.
Module Duration: The module is self-led and studied
independently. The orientation is expected to take
you 10 hours to complete and can be spread over any
desirable time frame, given that it is completed prior to
beginning your studies with the University of Liverpool
- this means that the module must be completed before
starting the Foundations for Academic Success module.
Foundations for Academic Success

• Library services: access to vital resources for
research and referencing questions; personalised
assistance from a librarian to help you with
specific research and referencing issues.
• eCampus community: build peer relationships and
share personal experiences. Connect with your
fellow students outside of the classroom in a vibrant
online community via virtual student lounges,
blogs, chat rooms, profiles and photo albums.
Student Readiness Orientation
Aim: To equip you with the technical skills
necessary to successfully study online, aided by
inspirational testimonials from current students and
alumni, in a rich multimedia environment.
Aim: To provide you with a deeper insight into the
requirements for successful participation in the postgraduate
programme, and to give you the opportunity to put
some of the essential skills and techniques learned during
the Student Readiness Orientation into practice.
• As well as providing a foundation for academic success,
this module will ease you into the credit-bearing modules
– ensuring you are fully prepared to succeed on your
programme of study. Assignments focus on the practical
application of writing and critical thinking skills. By the end
of the module, you will be able to demonstrate your ability
to evaluate scholarly resources, and define the role that
proper citation and referencing plays in academic integrity.
You will be competent at doing basic searches in the
University of Liverpool Online Library and be able to outline
a logical and coherent argument with supporting evidence.

• In this module, you will grasp the basic technical
information and knowledge needed to successfully
participate in an online curriculum. You will learn how
to use the online classroom to get assignments, interact
with instructors and other students, and submit work.
In this introduction you will gain a clear idea of what is
Module Duration: This module is tutor-led and demands 40
hours of course work which is spread over three weeks. The
first week demands a full 20 hours of course work, while the
remaining 20 hours are spread over two weeks (10 hours each
week) run in parallel with the beginning of the first module.
