ABSTRACT
Stray dogs are considered as an important health problem in societies because they can carry
dangerous diseases such as hydatidosis, toxocariasis and coenurus cerebralis to humans and
animals. Therefore, the study of helminthes infections in all parts of Iran for evaluation of
infection state, and provision of the infection control programs is essential. The aim of this study,
was to determine the prevalence of parasitic cestodes in stray dogs around Ilam city. In this study,
65 stray dogs were killed by shooting with the municipality officers and were dissected
considering health rules. After laparotomy, internal organs are inspected, and bowels completely
collected in separate containers containing 10% formaldehyde. Transferring the samples to the
parasitological laboratory, the bowels were cut using forceps, and its contents passed through the
sieve, and the worms were separated. Azo carmine & carminic acid staining was used for
diagnosis of isolated cestodes. The number of 65 dogs, 54 dogs (83%) had at least one species of
cestodes; that 32% (21 dogs) infected by Taenia ovis, 9% (6 dogs) by Echinococcus granulosus,
15.4% (10 dogs) by Taenia hydatigena, 20% (13 dogs) by Taenia multiceps, 18.5 /% (12 dogs) by
Dipylidium caninum and 10.8% (7 dogs) by Mesocestoides lineatus. In this study, it was shown
that helminthic rate in stray dogs is very high around Ilam. These parasites are important in terms
of health and economic aspects. Therefore, it is more essential that we note to parasitic infections,
to develop control programs.
INTRODUCTION
Canine intes3nal parasites may cause major diseases in humans
and animals that cause the health and economic losses to society.

Unfortunately, the infec3on rate of these diseases has not been

reduced due to the lack of changes at epidemiological and
ecological condi3ons.

In this journal, mul3ple studies of stray dogs have been conducted

in Ilam province including ci3es such as :
Mashhad
Hamadan Several results are
Kashan obtained.
Ardestan
Isfahan
Shiraz, and many other areas.
The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of intes3nal
worms in the Ilam stray using dissec3on method.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
From October 2011 to March 2012, a total of 65 stray dogs'
carcasses were dissected and examined macroscopically and
microscopically.

MACROSCOPIC :
Physical examina3on were done to determine the age and sex.

MICROSCOPIC :
The dog's carcass in the supine posi3on from end sec3ons of ribs
longitudinal and perpendicular was slit with a scalpel.
Early the mesenteric, and then the beginning of the stomach to the
end of anus were removed from the body. The Intes3nes were then
transferred to the laboratory.
Intes3nes were split in enamel basin with scissors.
Its contents were washed with mild stream of water and
passed through sieves containing 1 mm pores.
Helminthic samples were collected in glass containers
containing 10% formalin for staining for the nal diagnosis.
The azo carmine was used for temporary staining
Carminic acid & alcohols 50, 70, 80, 90, and 100% for permanent
staining.
The samples were carefully evaluated using a microscope.

The keys in the Schmidt's book were used as a reference to

iden3fy the gender and species of cestodes.
RESULTS
Six species of cestodes were isolated from a total of 65 dogs.
Of 65 dogs, 54 dogs had at least one helminthic parasite species.

The highest rate of infec?on associated with Taenia ovis and

the lowest rate with E. granulosus
DISCUSSION
Most intes3nal parasites detected in this study, have a worldwide distribu3on.

Given that stray dogs doesn't have owners to take care their nutri3on, health-care
and basic hygiene, intes3nal infec3ons in these dogs are natural.

Although the prevalence of this E. granulosus in Ilam province is lower, the

presence of the disease is s3ll a poten3al risk.
It has mul3ple interface hosts, and aects a variety of host organs.
It is presumed that the low prevalence of E. granulosus is caused by drought
in recent years.

The Taenia mul9ceps reported is the cause of a serious disease is called Coenurus
cerebralis.

Dipylidium caninum rarely causes human's infec3on, but is classied as a zoonosis.

Taenia ovis infec3on is the most common cestodes among dogs in this area, thus,
there has been usually the cys3cercosis disease in the sheep of this region
Economic losses.

Mesocestoides lineatus transmission to humans may cause diarrhea.

Dissec3on method were preferred over fecal analysis
because :
Taenia's eggs found in feces are quite similar to each other
cannot be used to dieren3ate Taenias accurately.
Scolexes & segments of adult tapeworms give beaer
accurate dieren3a3on hence dissec3on method were
chosen.
FACTORS AFFECTING STUDY RESULTS :
Supervision of health systems.
Veterinary inspec3on on meat and slaughterhouse waste.
The changes in recent clima3c states such as rainfall
decline and drought.
Ci3es development & urbanism.
OTHER STUDIES:
In a study held in Isfahan city at 2011, 60% of dogs were infected by
helminthic parasite.

Helminthic infec3on rate in dogs of Hamadan city was 100%, whereas, the
prevalence of E. granulosus 48.3 % (much higher)

In Kermanshah Province, (neighbor of the Ilam Province) the overall rate

of infec3on was 82.5%

Comparison of the infec?on rate in dierent areas may

represent a posi?ve or nega?ve role of the municipali?es
in oblitera?ng of the stray dogs.
