Thefundamentalprincipals

AnEngineershallendeavortoupholdandadvancetheintegrity,honouranddignityofthe
engineeringprofessionby

1.strivingtoenhancethecompetenceandprestigeoftheengineeringprofession;and
3.beinghonestandimpartial,andshallservewithfidelitythepublic,theiremployersandclients;
4.supportingtheprofessionalandtechnicalsocietiesoftheirdisciplines
5.usinghisknowledgeandskillfortheenhancementofhumanwelfare
TheFundamentalcanons/rules

1. upholdparamountthesafety,healthandwelfareofthepublicandtheprotectionofthe
environmentintheperformanceoftheirprofessionalduties;
2. performengineeringworksandservicesonlyintheareasofhis/hercompetence;
3. issuepublicstatementonlyinanobjectiveortruthfulmanner;
4. actinaprofessionalmannerforeachemployerorclientasfaithfulagentsortrustees,andshall
endeavortoavoidconflictofinterest;
5. buildhisprofessionalreputationonthemeritoftheservicesandshallnotcompeteunfairlywith
others;
6. continuehisprofessionaldevelopmentthroughouthiscareerandshallassistandprovide
opportunitiesfortheprofessionaladvancementofanengineerorengineersunderhis/her
supervision.
Obligationtosociety
Everyengineershall:
1.atalltimesrecognizethathisprimaryobligationistoprotectthesafety,health,
propertyandwelfareofthepublicinhisprofession
2.shallonlyapproveengineeringdocuments,which
areinconformitywithappropriatestandards.
3. Noengineershallpermittheuseofhisnameorhisfirmsnamenorassociateinbusinessventurewith
anypersonorfirm,whichhehasreasontobelieveisinvolvedinfraudulentordishonestbusinessor
professionalmalpractices.
5. beobjectiveandtruthfulinmakingorpresentingprofessionalreports,statementsortestimonies
7. shallexpressaprofessionalopinionontechnicalsubjectsonlywhenthatopinionisfoundedupon
competenceinthesubjectmatter.

Obligationstoemployerorclient
Everyengineershall:
1.discloseallknownorpotentialconflictsofinteresttotheiremployerorclientwhichmayinfluenceorappeartoinfluencetheir
judgmentorthequalityoftheirservices.
2.notacceptcompensation,financialorotherwise,frommorethanonepartyforservicesonthesameproject,orforservices
pertainingtothesameproject,unlessthecircumstancesarefullydisclosedtoandagreedto,byallinterestedparties.
3.Noengineershallsolicitoracceptfinancialorothervaluableconsideration,directlyorindirectlyfromcontractors,theiragentsor
otherpartiesinconnectionwithworkforemployersorclientsforwhichheisresponsible.
4.Exceptasauthorizedorrequiredbylaw,noengineershallrevealfacts,dataorinformationobtainedinaprofessionalcapacity
withoutpriorconsentoftheclientoremployer.
5.Anengineerinpublicserviceasamember,advisororemployeeofagovernmentalbodyordepartmentshallnotparticipatein
decisionswithrespecttoprofessionalservicesifheisaninterestedparty.
6.avoidimpropersolicitationofprofessionalemploymentandshall,inthecircumstances
a.notfalsifyorpermitmisrepresentationofhimself,hisassociates,academicorprofessional
qualifications,orexaggeratehisdegreeofresponsibility;
b.notfalsifyorpermitmisrepresentationofhimself,hisassociates,academicorprofessional
qualifications,orexaggeratehisdegreeofresponsibility;

7. Apracticingengineershallendeavortounderstandandtakeallreasonablestepstoinformhis
clientsandemployersofsocietalandenvironmentalconsequencesofactionsorprojectsinwhich
heis involvedandtointerpretissuestothepublicinanobjectiveand truthfulmanner.
Professionalobligations
1. Anengineershall:
a. beguidedinallhisprofessionalrelationsbythehigheststandardsofintegrityand
b. shalladmitandaccepthisownerrorswhenprovenwrongandrefrainfromdistortingoralteringthe
factsinanattempttojustifyhisdecisions;
c. shallnotacceptoutsideemploymenttothedetrimentofhisregularworkorinterest;
2. Anengineershallatalltimesstrivetoservethepublicinterestandshall
intheprocess
a. seekopportunitiestobeofaconstructiveserviceincivicaffairsandworkfortheadvancementof
thesafety,healthandwellbeingofhiscommunity;
b. endeavortoextendpublicknowledgeandappreciationofengineeringanditsachievementsand
toprotecttheengineeringprofessionfrommisrepresentationandmisunderstanding.
3.Everyengineershallavoidconductsorpractices,whicharelikelytodiscredittheprofessionor
deceivethepublic.

4. Noengineershallbeinfluencedinhisprofessionaldutiesbypolitical
involvementorconflictinginterestsandshall
a. notacceptfinancialorotherconsiderations,includingfreeengineeringdesignsfrommaterialorequipment
suppliersforspecifyingtheirproduct;
b. notacceptcommissionsorallowances,directlyorindirectlyfromcontractorsorotherpartiesdealingwith
clientsoremployersoftheengineerinconnectionwithworkforwhichtheengineerisresponsible;
5. Everyengineershallupholdtheprincipleofappropriateandadequate
compensationforthoseengagedinengineeringwork.
7. Noengineershallcompeteunfairlywithanotherengineerbyattemptingtoobtainemployment
orprofessionalengagementsbytakingadvantageofaposition,orbycriticizinganother engineer orby
otherimproperorunfairmeans.
9. Noengineershallrequest,propose,oracceptaprofessionalcommissionundercircumstancesin whichhis
professionaljudgmentmaybecompromised.
10.Noengineershallmaliciouslyorfalselyattempttoinjuredirectlyorindirectly,theprofessionalreputation,
prospects,practiceoremploymentofanotherengineer,norindiscriminatelycriticizeotherengineersworkand
intheeventthatanengineerbelievesthatanotherengineerisguiltyofunethicalorillegalpractice,shallpresent
suchinformationtotheBoard.

9.Anengineer
a. inprivatepracticeshallnotreviewtheworkofanotherengineerforthesameclient,except
withtheknowledgeofsuchotherengineer,orunlesstheconnectionofsuchengineerwith
theworkhasbeenterminated;
b. ingovernment,industrial,publicoreducationalemploymentisentitledtoreviewand
evaluatetheworkofotherengineerswhensorequiredbyhisemploymentduties;
c. insalesorindustrialemploymentisentitledtomakeengineeringcomparisonsof
representedproductswithproductsofothersuppliers;
d. shallnotcopyorstealotherengineersdocumentsorworkforhisspecialgain;
10. Everyengineershallacceptpersonalresponsibilityforeveryprofessional
activityunderhischargeand
a. shallconfirmwithestateregistrationlawsinthepracticeofengineering;
b. shallnotuseassociationwithanonengineer,acorporation,orpartnershipasa
cloakforunethicalacts,andifhedoes,hewilltakepersonalresponsibilityforhis
professionalactions.

11. Everyengineer:
a. shallgivecreditforengineeringworkofthosetowhom
creditisdue,andshallrecognizetheproprietaryinterestsofothers.
c. usingdesignssuppliedbyaclientshallrecognizethat thedesigns remainthepropertyoftheclient
whichshallnotbe duplicatedby theengineerforotherswithoutexpresspermission.
12.shallcooperateinextendingtheeffectivenessoftheprofessionby interchanging informationand
experiencewithotherengineersand studentsand will endeavor toprovideopportunityforthe
professional developmentand advancementof engineersunderhissupervision andinthatcase

c. He/sheshallencourageengineeringemployeeseffortstoimprovetheireducation;
e. He/sheshallencourageengineeringemployeestoattendandmake presentationsatprofessionaland
technicalsocietymeetings.

13. Everyengineershalltakeallreasonablestepstomaintainanddevelop hisprofessional


competencebyattentiontonewdevelopmentsinscienceandengineeringrelevanttohisfieldof
activitiesandshall provideopportunitiesfortheprofessionaldevelopmentofhis subordinates.
14. Anengineerwhoseprofessionaladviceisnotacceptedshalltakeallreasonablestepstoensure
thatpersonsoverrulingorneglectinghisadviceareawareofthedangerstheengineerbelieves
mayresultfromsuchoverrulingorneglect.
15. Noengineershallinselflaudatorylanguageorinanymatterderogatorytothedignityofthe
engineeringprofession,advertiseorwritearticlesforpublication.
16. Noengineershallassist,induceorbeinvolvedinthebreachofthisCodeofconductbutshalldo
allnecessaryendeavorstosupportthosewhoseektoupholditandreportimmediatelyany
unethicalengineeringdecisionsorpracticesbyengineersandotherstotheCouncil.
