What are wine legs, body and nose?

These commonly used terms describe how three of our senses are used in evaluating the anatomy of wine. Starting with an observation of the tiny streams of wine that cling to the inside of the glass, these “legs” are indicators of the overall richness, or power, of the wine. Wine higher in alcohol or sugar will exhibit these “tears” that creep back down after the glass is swirled. Try comparing legs of a Sauvignon Blanc with 12% alcohol with those of Chardonnay made with about 14% alcohol. The Sauvignon Blanc will exhibit faint legs that fall back into the glass fairly quickly while the Chardonnay’s legs will appear a little fatter and slower moving. Then taste the difference in richness between the two with the legs having clued you in to the wine’s style before you sip. Our sense of touch comes into play when a wine’s body is assessed. Also known as “mouthfeel,” body can be light, as in a domestic Ries- ling, medium, like a Pinot Noir, or full-bodied, such as Syrah. As a general rule, wines that are made in a full body style will also have a higher alcohol content to help balance the overall makeup of the wine. Many popular “New World” (USA, Australia, Chile) wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz (the Australian name for Syrah) are described as full bodied. To the contrary, many notable Cabernets and Syrah from the “Old World” (France, Italy) are generally said to

possess elegance and complexity in a more delicate, medium body style. Neither approach is necessarily superior--only personal preference matters when choosing one or the other. Finally, the term “nose” is used as a synonym for smell. A wine is said to have a nice “nose” if it has distinctive and pleasing aromas that invite the taster to indulge. When you evaluate a wine’s nose, stick your nose deep inside the glass and take several strong sniffs while concentrating on the scents that hit you. Although wine is made from grapes, its aroma (some- times interchanged with “bouquet”) is seldom “grapey”. Instead, you’ll get the smell of anything from wild berries to jasmine, depending on the wine.

WINE COUNTRY NEWS

Wine Garage – Here Comes the Jug!

Well, it has taken a while, but the Wine Garage Jug Wine Program has been free-flowing for the past 18 months. The custom- made, stainless-steel taps facilitate the flow of two righteous and deli- cious blends, B1 (a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Merlot and Petit Verdot) and R1 (a Rhone-style blend of Syrah, Zinfandel, Grenache, Mourvedre and Petite Sirah). “My biggest problem,” says co-owner, Todd Miller, “is that customers can't decide which to buy because they love them both so much.” And with good reason. Miller bought the individual lots of finished wine that make up each blend from some of his personal winemaking friends. The wine came from grapes from several of Napa’s most prestigious vineyards. He's sworn to secrecy on the vine- yard sources so the Wine Garage blends don’t compete against the same wines priced at two, three or even four times what Miller sells it for – just $29.99 for a half-gallon jug, filled to order. When Todd and Joy Miller moved to Napa Valley in 2001, they were surprised to find that they could hardly find any wines for less than $45 a bottle. Then they went to a dinner party at a winemaker's home, and were shocked to discover that many winemakers couldn't afford to drink the wines they made. That's when the Millers decided to open the first wine shop in Napa Valley that only carried wines under $25 a bottle. So in 2003, Todd Miller swapped his corporate necktie for jeans and boots and started scouring Northern California for great, undis- covered wines to offer at the new wine shop, the Wine Garage in Calistoga. Miller drove the roads less traveled, meeting with wine- makers, walking in their vineyards, and tasting their grapes, barrel samples and finished wines. The winemakers, tickled to have a real, live wine buyer at their winery, shared stories with Miller over a glass of wine at the dinner table. The Wine Garage carries a wide selection of bargains from Sonoma and Napa, and gems from as far afield as Paso Robles, Lodi, the Sierra Foothills and Mendocino County. The store features wines under $25 (with the exception of three Private Label wines), and Miller doesn’t

buy a wine for the store unless he loves it. What’s best is the Wine Garage staff takes the guesswork out of wine shopping: tell the staff what you're looking for and they will steer you to the perfect bottle. The Wine Garage is a licensed winery, and in addition to the blends on tap, they produce a line of their own Wine Garage wines from grapes they crush. For reds they offer a Napa Valley Zinfandel, a Zin blend from Napa Valley, a Rhone blend from The North Coast of California, and three selections of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons. They also offer a white blend: Joy Ride (named for Todd’s business partner, Joy), a lively blend of Albarino, Sauvignon Blanc, Viog- nier and Muscat. The Wine Garage’s wine club is one of the best deals around. Club members can choose to receive six bottles of red wine (or three red and three white) six times per year for $110 per shipment, plus shipping. The Wine Garage also offers an “Intense Red” selection of massively concentrated and extracted wines, also six bottles six times per year for $135-$145 per shipment, plus shipping. The Wine Garage, located at 1020 Foothill Boulevard (Highway 29) in Calistoga, is open from 11 a.m. till 6:30 p.m. Monday thru Saturday and 11 a.m. till 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
