RATIONALE for the CK Learning Plan Introduction Activating Prior Knowledge A couple weeks ago I know you were working on penguin stories. Can you tell me a little bit about your stories? What did you write about? What were some of the things you learned about penguins? Hook/Lead-In/Anticipatory Set Today I have brought in a fun activity we can do together about penguins- show them my flipbook.
Explicit Big Idea Statement Instructions Adaptations and cycles are apart of human and animal lives Essential Questions Statement What is a cycle? What are some things that humans or animals do to survive? Objective Statement The students will be able to, recognize and explain penguins adaptions and how they survive as a class, while sitting in small groups. 4 out of 5 times
Transition Show them my penguin flipbook Now I have given you all zip block baggies with the materials youll need for my activity today. Key Vocabulary Adaptations Cycles Predators Lesson Procedure PreAssessment of Students When the students are talking about their penguin stories from a couple weeks ago, keep a idea in my head how many students answer and what their answers are. Modeling of the Concept I will show the students and demonstrate the penguin flipbook I have already created and explain to the students what we will be doing. I will use the Elmo, and project my finished penguin so, they have an idea of what is going. Guiding the Practice I will demonstrate each step with the students pause and ask questions throughout the lesson. I will use the Elmo, and project my paper on the board so all of the students can see. On the front predators, live, eat, and do- glue and respond- explain what are predators, where do they live, what they eat, and what they do. Open left flap- adaptations. Glue/ respond why do penguins need this adaptation? Why might it help them survive? Open the right flap- life cycle. Glue/match There are 6 steps to the life cycle of a penguin match with the number step to picture of it. Ex: 1 egg- match with the picture of an egg. Open both flaps. Glue/ respond types of penguins adelie, macaroni, emperor, chinstrap, rock hopper, king- special characteristics and unique features. Lastly, on the map, color in areas where penguins might live. Providing the Independent Practice I have additional graphic organizers, labeling activities, and writing prompts for the students to take home. Transition It looks like it is just about time to leave, so why dont we rap up what we are doing and clean up our materials. Reading Materials Glue Technology Flipbook Equipment Zip block bags full of materials Supplies Additional hangouts that I have for the students
Evaluation of the Formal Evaluation Learning/Mastery Students will turn in their Flipbooks at the end of class and I will of the Concept check their responses on their penguin flaps.
Informal Evaluation They completed the Penguin Flipbook, then they know that penguins have adaptations and they have a life cycle.
Closure Summary & Review of the Learning The students will recognize and explain penguin adaptations and life cycles. Humans and animals need their adaptations to survive, what are some of the ways Homework/Assignments
