FIRST NAME Joo Marcos MODULE CODE
SEMESTER Autumn GROUP
YEAR 2016 TUTOR Benjamin Leroux

SECTION 1: INDEPENDENT STUDY PLAN

Guidelines:
- Complete this section electronically and bring a printout with you to your Lab session in
Week 4
- After discussing them with you, your tutor will vet your topic and tasks and will retain the
printout as evidence of what you have decided to do as part of your independent work for the
module
- You should then try to stick to your originally agreed goals, but you can also consult with
your tutor should you wish to change these before submitting the ISR in Week 11
- Please note that failure to have this section of your ISR vetted in Week 4 or changing your
topic and/or tasks without your tutors prior approval may be regarded as equating to
Unsatisfactory Submission of the ISR and prevent you from meeting the validation or
progression criteria for the module.

TOPIC
Guidelines:
- Choose a topic of interest to you and relevant to your understanding of the target culture, but
preferably not covered in class during the semester
- Briefly explain the reason(s) why this topic matters to you
- The topic will be vetted by your Lab tutor in week 4 and should not be changed afterwards
without their prior agreement
Topic Title The interaction between the book and the movie Jules et Jim
Your reasons Although I have always liked Franois Truffaut, I had never watched his film
for choosing Jules et Jim, and when I had discovered that the movie was based on a novel,
this topic I thought that would be a very interesting task reading the book and
comparing with the movie.

SKILL AREAS
Guidelines:
- After completing the diagnostic test provided on MOLE as part of the ISR documentation and
reflecting on your own language needs, list two language skill areas (i.e. Speaking, writing,
reading or writing) you intend to improve through your ISR work
- You may want to be more specific and also provide sub-skills you intend to focus on in
particular. The marking criteria provided on MOLE for the speaking and writing assessment
associated with your module list many of these sub-skills (e.g. grammar accuracy,
pronunciation, intonation, vocabulary, registers, etc.)
- The skill areas you choose to work on will be vetted by your Lab tutor in week 4 and should
not be changed afterwards without their prior agreement
Skill area 1 Writing, specially expressing difficult ideas in a minimal academic form.
Skill area 2 Speaking, specially sharing information with a native speaker.

TASKS
Guidelines:
- After completing the SKILL AREAS section above, choose two tasks among those suggested

1

in the ISR Task Portfolio which you plan to work on as part of your ISR in order to develop
your knowledge of the TOPIC that you chose whilst enabling you to improve these SKILL
AREAS
- Before choosing these tasks:
o think carefully about the materials you will need to find and their possible
availability in relation to your topic
o consider how long it should take you altogether to complete each task and report on
it in the next section As a guide, you will be expected to demonstrate that you spent
at least two hours on each task, but you are obviously free to choose more ambitious
tasks requiring more time on your part
- If you choose a standard task, just provide its number and title on the ISR Task Portfolio
- If you choose a free task that you have designed yourself, please describe it briefly,
providing method and learning outcomes
- Optional Third Task:
o We have left some space for you to record your work on a third task if you would like
to.
o There is no need to get your tutors approval on this third task but please ask for
guidance if you need to.
Task 1 Writing an small essay (more than 300 words) comparing the movie and the
book. Thereby I had watched the movie in french
Task 2 Recording a small interview in French, with a French native speaker under
the relationship of the movie and book.
Task 3 Reading as far possible the Henri-Pierre Rochs book Jules et Jim.
(Optional)

(Print the above section and bring it to your Lab class in Week 4)

SECTION 3: REFLECTION
Guidelines:
- Once you have completed the two tasks, answer the questions below about your independent
study work
- Your answers can be written in English if you are in Intermediate or Higher Intermediate, but
must be in the language you are studying for this module if you are in Advanced or Higher

if you wish to write more
- Dont forget to refer to Task 3 too if you have completed it.

Did you face any recurrent issues while working on your tasks? How did you manage to
solve these?

How did the tasks contribute to your development as an autonomous learner? Is there
anything you have taken from the portfolio that you would like to include from now on
regularly in your learning routine?

Looking back to your initial checklist, do you feel that you have improved in the areas of
your language development that you had identified as key? If so, what do you think helped
you the most? If not, can you identify why you were not as successful as you had hoped?

Task Suggestion: If you would like to suggest a new task to be included in the Task
Portfolio in the future, please outline this task below.
