Dills Future

Do you think graduated in the college which pursue your interest will give you more

income and opportunity? From the novel The Serpent King, that written by Jeff Zentner,

Dillard Early Jr. is a son of Dillard Early and his grandfather also name Dillard Early. His

grandfather was called The Serpent King by local people because He slaughter many

snakes to revenge for his daughter's death. His father was a pastor before he ends up in prison

because of he is convicted of downloading child pornography. Dill hobby is creating songs.

Dill family is in debts so Dill mom dont want Dill to enroll to college. Many students also

bully Dill about his father. Travis and Lydia are Dill only two friends. Travis is already dead.

Lydia and Dill is now in love. Lydia family welcome Dill and help him in many ways. Dill is

motivated to go to college by his dream, people in the town, and Lydia.

Dill talent about music dominant his thought about college. Dill like to play guitar and

create songs. He records it and with Lydia help he upload his videos on YouTube. He later

attended the talent show, and play his song live. He won the first prize. Later he starts to

create many songs. One of his song is about Lydia, he sings it to Lydia after they came back

from MTSU. Lydia say Dill videos had 9,227 views and forty-nine comments, all positive

(Zentner, 2016, p.191). It shows that many people like Dill song. Dill now have more

confident in his songs because the comments on YouTube. He believes that many people love

his songs. So, he wants to go to college and show his ability in music, also due to many

people bully and hate him so he wants to leave this town.

The people in the town influences Dills speculation about college. Many people in the

town think that Dill is bad because his father is in prison and his grandfather is crazy about

snakes. Dill doesnt have many friends at school and some students bully him, they often

called him Dildo, which makes Dill feels depressed. One day when Dill working he see

Allison daughter crying so walk up to her, when Allison see. She says, You stay away from
her, stay away, I know who you are, youre Dillard Earlys son, you dont touch my child got

it (Zentner, 2016, p.153). This quote express Allison attitude about Dill which is hate, even

Dill dont do anything wrong. It represents the people in the town attitude about Dill and his

family which is hate. Dill feels that, he doesnt want to stay in this town anymore because of

bullied in school and many people in the town dont like neither his father nor him. He thinks

that if he leaves the town, then they wont be anyone know about his father, there will be no

one bullying him. It will make him feel like, he has new superior life. It will generate new

opportunity. Due to people in the town feeling and bullied in the school and Lydia makes Dill

want to enter the college.

Lydia is the major part that influence Dill idea about college. Lydia always encourage

Dill that if he goes to college, then it will give him more opportunity for his future. The

reason that she convinces and help him is she love and cares Dill very much. She later helps

Dill find the college that pursue Dill interest and send the college application and essay. She

also helps him find the financial aid which is a major problem that make Dill dont want to

enter college. Lydia say Ill be able to get you to do other stuff youre afraid to do like leave

this town and go to college, Maybe I just need to break through your comfort zone this once

(Zentner, 2016, p.191). This quote tells that she really cares about Dill future and wants Dill

to leave this town to have a better life in college. She motivated him by her full ability which

change Dill decision about college. She really cares and love him makes Dill get motivated

and change his mind. Without Lydia motivation, then Dill wont enter the college, he will end

up as a normal employee.

Dill talent in music, people notion and Lydia, motivate Dill about enter to college. Dill

think that if he enters college, then it will give him more opportunity about his dream. Also,

some people bully him and dont like his father nor him so they oppressed him. Lydia
convincing and helps motivated Dill to enroll to college. These motivation change Dill

decisions and makes him enroll to college.
