Two Stroke Diesel Engine Turbocharger

1.1 INTRODUCTION
2. A two-stroke diesel engine is a diesel engine that works in two strokes. A diesel engine is an
internal combustion engine that operates using the Diesel cycle. Invented in 1892 by German
engineer Rudolf Diesel. All diesel engines use compression ignition, a process by which fuel is
injected after the air is compressed in the combustion chamber, thereby causing the fuel to self-
ignite.
3. Intake begins when the piston is near the bottom dead center. Air is admitted to the cylinder
through ports in the cylinder wall. All two-stroke Diesel engines require artificial aspiration to
operate, and will either use a mechanically driven blower or a turbo-compressor to charge the
cylinder with air.
4. As the piston rises, the intake charge of air is compressed. Near top dead center, fuel is injected,
resulting in combustion due to the charge's extremely high pressure and heat created by
compression, which drives the piston downward. As the piston moves downward in the cylinder,
it will reach a point where the exhaust port is opened to expel the high-pressure combustion
gasses.
5. Turbo-diesel, also refers to any diesel engine equipped with a turbocharger. Turbocharging is
common in modern car and truck diesel engines to produce higher power outputs, lower
emissions levels, and improved efficiency from a similar capacity of engine. Turbo-diesels in
automobiles offer a higher refinement level than their naturally aspirated counterparts.

1.2 THE RESEARCH PROBLEM

Mostly in two stroke engines entails only partial burning of fuel. This may due to lack of oxygen or
low temperature, preventing the complete chemical reaction.Carbon monoxide is produced as a
byproduct from incomplete combustion of carbon. Low fuel efficiency is obtained from a 2 stroke
engine because the amount of time to allow for proper combustion is very less. This also means that

due to improper combustion the amount of emissions coming out of exhaust lead to high emissions
which pollute the environment. The turbocharger provides excess amount of air above the
stoichiometric requirement for complete combustion. The main aim of involving turbocharger in two
stroke diesel engines is to increase power obtaining more fuel efficiency, controlling emission levels
and finally gives more output.

1.2 The purpose of the study

The main purpose of this project is to improve the efficiency of sucker-rod pumping system. And we
can improve its efficiency in two ways, the first one is to improve the operational efficiency and the
second one is to improve the lifting efficiency. Operational efficiency can be improved by
modification in design of beam. And lifting efficiency can be improved by modification in the design
of sucker rod.
