Video Tutorial: Storybird as an Educational Tool

There are different programs online that educators can use to show their students how to

create stories online, but my favorite is Storybird as it allows free participation. Storybird also is

convenient as it allows educators to create a classroom and add students without the addition of having

to create a separate email for each student which can take a lot of time for the educator to do when

looking at an elementary level student especially a younger student. In order to be able to use this

tool, there are a few steps that are not very complicated but that I will outline here in a tutorial. There is

an outline of the instructions below.

I. Go to the website www.storybird.com

II. Click on sign up for free and create an account

a. Create a user name and password, add email address and type of account (in this

case we will select educator.

b. Confirm your account via email.

III. Add students without having to input email addresses.

a. Create usernames and add student names yourself or allow the students to create

their own

IV. Have students log in to begin creating amazing stories.

a. Use the user name and join the classroom that you set up.

V. Students click on CREATE in the top menu.

a. Choose some artwork to write about make sure that it inspires the student.

b. Artwork can also be assigned out by the educator and everyone in the class can

create a story about the same picture.

VI. Students choose their story layout.

a. They can select a picture book, a poem, or a longform or multi chapter book as age

level appropriate

VII. Once the format is selected, the students click on the blank box to write their story

about the picture.

VIII. When they are done with one picture, they can move onto another picture by simply

clicking on the picture.

IX. Students can save their work as they go and can also save and exit their work at the end

of the work period.

a. Upon first saving, the students will be prompted to choose a cover and a title for

their book.

b. Students can also select if their work is completed or not.

i. Once the work is completed, the students can choose to publish the story

privately or publicly on Storybird.

X. Parents also can be granted access to view their students work.

This tool offers so many possibilities for educators to use with their students in terms of creative

writing. Storybird has a large amount of use in the classroom setting and also encourages parent

participation. This program can be used by students to set their imagination free and really delve into

creative writing. I like the idea that students can be assigned to work on the same artwork or to

different artwork and that parents are able to view their stories through the website access.

I cannot publish a video for this project as you are already well aware. I have completed the

additional parts of the project and expect to be graded on those and to be graded fairly.
