The Independence of the United States is one of the most important episodes of Universal
History. It happened when the 13 English colonies of North America rebelled against the
British Empire and, led by George Washington, managed to conquer it in the battle of
Yorktown (1781) and they reached their freedom.
Causes:
The 13 English colonies of North America revolted against the excessive taxes created by
the king of England Jorge III. For example: the sugar tax of 1764 and the stamp duty of
1765. They also rejected the King's granting the monopoly of tea to the East India
Company.
On October 7, 1777, the colonists won the Battle of Saratoga and on October 19, 1781, they
triumphed in the decisive Battle of Yorktown. On September 3, 1783, with the signing of
the Peace of Versailles, England recognized the Independence of the United States.
