COMMIT TO CLEAN WATER PROJECT UPDATE

Each year we try to identify and introduce new community projects. Our aim is always to improve
the lives of the local people in the Mfuwe area so in 2014 we embarked upon an ambitious
project to provide safe, clean water to villages in the local community. We called this new
initiative "Commit to Clean Water." Now at the end of 2017 we are proud to say that so far, we
have installed more than 50 borehole water wells in the local Chiefdoms of the Luangwa Valley,
giving over 7000 people access to clean, safe water!

Where people live in close proximity to wildlife and where water collection is often a flashpoint of
human/wildlife conflict, not only does the provision of clean, safe water change the lives of the
people of the valley but also its a fundamentally important contribution to wildlife conservation.

Most of us take it for granted that, with the simple act of turning on a tap, clean, safe water will
always be available. But around half of the world's population lacks this most basic of life's
necessities.

It is estimated that in Africa alone over 345 million people are without access to clean
water.

Women spend 200 million hours a day collecting water.

More than 3.4 million people die each year from water, sanitation and hygiene-related
causes. Nearly all deaths, 99 percent, occur in the developing world.

In the Luangwa valley, the majority of villagers still have no convenient access to safe, clean
water.

There is an answer to this problem. Safe, clean water is available, but it is trapped deep
underground in aquifers and bands of sand. To reach it, deep boreholes need to be drilled and
central pumps provided. This is not such a difficult task, but it does require funding and
organization. The Bushcamp Company in conjunction with generous donors and a local drilling
company (Makolekole Ltd whose equipment and skills are especially suited to the alluvial and
sometimes hard to access remote areas of the Luangwa Valley) is succeeding in the ambitious
project to provide boreholes in village locations where the need is greatest. Each borehole costs
around US$7000 to construct, but with continuing donor support, we plan to extend this project to
yet more needy areas.

We consider the success of this project vital to the well-being of our local communities, providing
tangible benefits to thousands of people as well as playing an intrinsic part in conserving wildlife
by solving one of the most challenging human/animal conflict problems and ensuring that local
residents benefit directly from safari tourism.

Why have we committed to clean water.?

This is how thousands of people in the remotest parts of Zambias Luangwa Valley collect their
water.
In many cases, women and children, the traditional water collectors, must walk many miles each
day to find water. It is often contaminated and sometimes they are at risk from wild animals who
share the scarce resource usually elephants.

Health, school performance productivity and general well-being are all negatively affected by
the daily slog of collecting water and much of the water from these shallow wells is
contaminated.
How do we solve this problem?

A community is identified by the Commit to Clean Water committee

Makolekole mobilises from their base not too far from Mfuwe Lodge - meeting some water carriers
along the way! Bushcamp Company is coming!
Drilling in action

The whole community lends a hand the borehole casings going in, it usually takes around a
week to complete including the concrete surround and soakaway.
Clean, fresh water for the first time in the village

Everyone enjoys the pump testing!

Completed borehole and village committee. Now, theres water on the doorstep!
Each village is selected by a committee from the Commit to Clean Water Fund. The criteria are fairly simple.
The new borehole must serve at least 100 people, it should not be in an area where unplanned settlement is
a problem, the borehole is agreed with the local Chief and installed according to Government specs and in
association with the local Council. Each borehole is tested and licenced, and to ensure sustainability the
community forms a committee to organise care, maintenance and repair of the borehole and surrounds.
We have come up with a design that enables the collection of waste water which can be used to irrigate
vegetable gardens and to provide water for domestic stock such as ducks and chickens so our water
wells also improve food security and nutrition!
A new vegetable garden providing much needed improved nutrition and an opportunity to earn
money selling excess veg. The new village borehole is the social hub - lives are fundamentally
changed and enhanced.

A community of up to 200 men, women and children now, instead of travelling miles to
dangerous rivers or scooping dirty water from shallow wells, has access to clean, safe
WATER FOR LIFE!

Thank you to all of you who have

made this project such an amazing
and on-going success!
