effective research paper; for his consideration and suggestion on how to make

Dr. Ella D. Mirandilla for approving and letting us conduct this study; to our

loving parents who supported us morally and financially in fulfilling this study; to

the students especially the respondents who served as a big help in order for us

ABSTRACT

FACTORS AFFECTING THE ORAL COMMUNICATION COMPETENCY OF

THE ABM STUDENTS IN NABUA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL S/Y 2017-2018

This study aimed to determine the factors that affect the Oral

Communication Competency of the ABM Senior High School students of Nabua

National High School. The researchers utilized the descriptive method of

research since the objective of it is to measure how competent the ABM students

are in oral communication likewise the use of questionnaires as an instrument to

gather the data needed for this study. Availability sampling method was used by

the researchers to choose the respondents to answer the given questionnaires.

Sixty ABM students from Nabua National High School were chosen. The

answers of the respondents were analyzed and interpreted.

From the treated data, the following findings are summarized. 1.) Majority

of the thirty-four respondents have low self-esteem making it the most affective

factor on their oral communication competency while the least affective factor is

extroversion by the two respondents. 2.) Out of the sixty respondents, twenty five

of them are afraid of making grammatical mistakes while the two respondents

said that their grammatical aptitude results to misunderstanding. 3.) Majority of

the respondents said that anxiety is the most affective internal factor when they

present in front of the class while the least affective factor is the lack of

vocabulary. 4.) Out of the sixty respondents, fifteen of them are fond of reading

books and different articles likewise thinking for future needs as their greatest

means of motivation to improve their oral communication competency in the

classroom. 5.) The students need a guidebook in order for them to have a self-

awareness to improve their oral communication competency. Based from the

summary of findings, the following conclusions are deduced. 1.) The data

revealed that low self-esteem hinders the respondents oral communication

competency because they are not confident enough to speak or talk in front of

the crowd especially inside the classroom. 2.) Most students are afraid to speak

or have a low level of self-confidence because of their low grammatical aptitude.

3.) The data shown that most of the respondents have an anxiety whenever they

are to participate or speak in front of the class because they are afraid to commit

grammatical errors. 4.) The respondents means of motivation to improve their

oral communication competency inside the classroom is by reading books and

other published or written works. 5.) The proposed guidebook will help enhance

the students performance inside their classrooms and will serve as their drive to

improve their oral communication skills.

From the foregoing conclusions, the following recommendations are

offered. 1.) Since majority of the respondents encountered difficulties in oral

communication skills because of their lack of vocabulary to construct a coherent

sentence, they should be encouraged by the teacher to cooperate in oral

discussions to hasten their competency in speaking in front of the class. 2.)

Teachers should strictly implement the use of the Standard English language to

practice the capability of students in expressing such thoughts. 3.) The teachers

must make new strategies in teaching so that the students will be encouraged to

listen throughout the entire discussion. 4.) The students are advised to visit

school libraries more often than usual in order for them to be motivated in

participating class discussions and reporting. 5.) Students are recommended to

have a guidebook that will serve as their drive to improving their oral

communication competency.
