Question 1

You can write :

a) sentences describing activities


and
b) sentences describing situation.
Or
c) combined sentences describing activities and situation.

Sample sentences describing situation.

1. There were many beautiful flowers in full bloom.


2. Many people are doing different activities in the park.
3. The park is located near some apartments.
4. There was a wide range of shops selling shoes, electrical appliances and clothes.
5. There is a huge Christmas tree with many colorful ornaments hanging on it.
6. The fishmonger who sells fish has an assistant to help him.
7. There is a basket of fruits on the table next to his bed.

Sample sentences describing activities.

1. A man is throwing the garbage bag into the truck.


2. A girl is blowing the candles on the cake.
3. The boy wearing a pair of shorts is picking up the rubbish.
4. The lady carrying a basket is paying the grocer some money.
5. The girl whose hair is long is running around the park.
6. The cat which is in the cage is looking up at the little boy.
7. Two boys are swimming under the waterfall while their mother is serving food.
8. The pupils are walking hurriedly from their classroom to the canteen.

The basic rule in constructing a sentence.

Who Verb What Where


1. The girl is planting an orchid plant in the pot.
2a) The man is wearing a pair of tracksuit.
b) The man is jogging around the park.

Combine sentences to make up compound and complex sentences.


a) A man is jogging in the park.
b) A woman is feeding the birds in the park.
= A man is jogging and a woman is feeding the birds in the park.

a) The man is wearing a pair of tracksuit.


b) The man is jogging around the park.
= The man who is wearing a pair of tracksuit is jogging around the park.

a) A woman is feeding the birds in the park.


b) A woman is standing by the lake.
= A woman is feeding the birds in the park while standing by the lake.
AVOID Commented [u1]:

1. Using the article the unless you are identifying the person in the picture. E.g : The man is throwing
the rubbish. Use A A man is throwing the rubbish.
2. Using many when there is less than 10 people in the picture as in There are many people in the
picture. when there are only seven people in the picture. Use a few.
3. Using the past tense form as this section requires you to describe the picture. Try to use the present
continuous tense form.
4. Writing sentences in sequence as in a story. You are not writing a story.
5. Making assumptions. E.g A scene in a hospital. She is admitted into the ward because she has fever.
6. Writing more than five sentences. E.g
1. A policeman is standing in the middle of the road.
2. He is wearing a uniform, helmet and white gloves.
3. He is directing the traffic from all directions.
4. There are motorcycles in front of the lorries and busses. The motorcyclist is also wearing a
helmet.
5. The vehicles stop when the policeman blows his whistle and raises his hand. They obey him.

TO GAIN MORE MARKS

1. Write in compound and complex sentences.


2. Avoid grammatical and structural errors. These are major errors which could lower your band.
3. Avoid punctuation and spelling errors.
4. Introduce new words. Make your sentences interesting and colorful.

1. Read the instruction carefully. Names might be given.

2. Note the tense used. Extract the verbs to help you.

3. Use past tense when writing about an incident or an event.


Use the present tense form when writing about ones hobby, occupation, daily activities or facts.

4. Try not to change the tense as this might lead to mistakes.

5. Introduce new words. Make your product interesting.


E.g : walk strolled, pranced, strutted, marched.

6. You do not have to use all the words given.

7. This section requires your creativity.


Use idioms, proverbs and metaphors to make your story interesting.

8. Avoid grammatical and structural mistakes. These are major mistakes that will lower your band.

9. Avoid spelling and punctuation errors.

10. A simple rule to remember a complete sentence must have at least one subject and one predicate.

11. Make sure your writing is legible and neat.

Again, the basic rule of constructing a sentence applies here.
