Location
British Columbia is Canadas westernmost province,
set between the Pacific Ocean and the Rocky
Mountains. Its beautiful scenery and outdoor
activities appeal to people from around the world.
Vancouver Island and the coastal regions of BC have a mild and pleasant climate with warm, dry summers and mild, wet
winters, while the Thompson-Okanagan and the Cariboo region is drier, with pleasant winters and hot summers. BCs a
great place for outdoor sports because of its famous diverse landscape and year-round natural beauty. Popular summer
hiking spots include the West Coast Trail and Kootenay National Park. In the winter, skiing and snow boarding are a
popular pastime; there are three ski resorts near Vancouver.

Vancouver is a multicultural city, part of a larger metropolitan area known as Metro Vancouver. With a population of
2,313,328 (2011 census), it is the largest metropolitan area in Western Canada and the third- largest in the country.
Vancouvers downtown core is on a peninsula, and includes the West End, Coal Harbour, and Yaletown, and is
surrounded by ocean, parks, and a spectacular view of the mountains. This area boasts the reputation of being one of
the most beautiful places in the world to live.

The University of British Columbia is one of North Americas largest public research and teaching institutions,
consistently ranked among the worlds 40 best universities. The Vancouver campus is located at the western tip of the
Point Grey Peninsula in the city of Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada. More than 400 hectares in size, the stunning
campus is surrounded by forest on three sides and ocean on the fourth, and is just a 30 minute bus ride to
Vancouvers downtown core. The campus has been located on this site for most of its 100-year history; a location that is
the traditional territory of the Musqueam people. UBC also has its Okanagan campus, which opened in Kelowna in 2005.

Get Involved at the Centre for Student Involvement in Brock Hall; join clubs, Intramural teams, Department
councils, Undergraduate societies, Peer Programs, and Orientation programs (i.e.: Imagine UBC and Jump Start);
Volunteer for the AMS or GSS, Volunteer at the UBC Hospital. Attend the Best Campus Events: Storm the Wall,
Clubs Days, SUB Movies, Day of the Longboat, Grad Nooners, Job Fairs, Firstweek concert, Student Leadership
Conference.

Visa Information for International Students: If you already have a valid study permit for post-secondary study in Canada,
you may use that study permit to study at UBC (unless otherwise noted on the study permit). As a post-secondary student,
you can transfer between programs of study and institutions without applying to change the conditions of your study
permit. You can also transfer between public and private institutions. If you hold a valid off-campus work permit that was
issued while you were at your previous school, you must transfer that permit to UBC.

Health Insurance Information Mandatory health insurance:

Full-year exchange: $150 for iMED covering three-month waiting period for the British Columbia Medical Services
Plan (MSP); $64/month for MSP (See http://students.ubc.ca/international?page=insurance&view=msp)

iMED is the basic health insurance required for all new international exchange students. Enrolment is automatic upon
registration for your courses. Please visit the website for further information (including coverage dates). Students on
exchange for six months or longer are required to apply for the (MSP). As there is a three-month waiting period for MSP,
students are covered by iMED during this period

Single-term exchange: $213 for iMED (See http://www.david-cummings.com/imed/)

iMED is the basic health insurance required for all new international exchange students. Enrolment is automatic upon
registration for your courses. Please visit the website for further information (including coverage dates). Students are not
eligible for MSP if they study at UBC for only one term. In this case, iMED will cover you for the duration of your stay
(approximately four months and one week).
