PLAN
2. INTRODUCTION

OBJECTIVES ( SCHOOL SUPPORT PLAN )

To enable English Language teachers to foster continuous cycles of

students improvement by ;

i) Using various types of data to support pedagogical decision

making.

ii) Analysing and interpreting students performance data in order to

identify gaps in students knowledge and skills.

iii) Developing and implementing effective interventions to address

these gaps.
2. CONTEXTS OF SCHOOLS AND STUDENTS

2.1 In early July 1994, KPM agreed and approved the proposal of building SMK Air Itam with

an allocation of RM7,861,500. In August 1994, JKR informed JPN Pulau Pinang that Farlim

( M ) Sdn. Bhd. had offered to build SMK Air Itam. SMK Air was completed in December 1995

with 11 Remove classes and 7 Form 1 classes.

2.2 At present, there are 35 classes in SMK Air Itam. There are 2 Remove classes, 7 Form 1

classes, 7 Form 2 classes, 7 Form 3 classes , 6 Form 4 classes and 6 Form 5 classes. We have

14 English teachers and all of them are optionists.

2.3 The class chosen for the School Support Plan is 5 Science. 5 Science consists of 21

students. Most of the students are of average achievement in English.

3 DATA ANALYSIS

3.1 A pre- test carried out was on Directed Writing and students were required to write a

report. Students were given the question with content points and students wrote the report.

3.2 Students written data was collected and marked and students errors were identified.

3.3 Some gaps were identified from the students written data. The gaps were :

a) subject - verb agreement

b) vocabulary

c) sentence structure

d) spelling

e) punctuation

Gaps selected were:

a) subject - verb agreement

b) vocabulary

c) sentence structure
4. DESCRIBING INTERVENTIONS

4.1 The duration of the action plan was about 6 weeks.

4.2 The gaps identified were :

a) subject - verb agreement

b) vocabulary

c) sentence structure

Activities carried out were :

Subject - verb agreement

Video on subject- verb agreement

Students watched a video on subject- verb agreement. Teacher went through the rules with the

students by giving a few examples. After that, a few good students were asked to come up with

some examples, orally.

Substitution Table

Substitution table on manila card. Teacher drilled the sentences from the substitution table with

the students. Students formed sentences from the table on their own in their exercise books.

Underline verbs from a short text.

Students read and underlined verbs in a short text.

.

Vocabulary

Word search

Teacher distributed the worksheet on the word search with the vocabulary given.

Students identified and circled the words.

Teacher drilled the words and meanings with the students.

Matching words to meanings

Some students had the words ( word strips) and others had the meanings of the words. Students with

words searched for the meanings, and then pasted them on the board. Then, they copied the words

and meanings in their exercise books.

4.3 I assessed my students formally by checking their exercises and informally through my conversation

with them.

4.4 Most of the interventions were carried out successfully. It would have been better if the duration

given was longer as students needed time to practise .

5. DISCUSSION OUTCOMES OF THE INTERVENTION

5.1 Post Test

The post test was carried out on 18 August.

5.2 Students were asked to write a report to the principal. The pre test was also on a report.

5.3 Marked the students scripts and identified the errors. Informed the students about their errors and

compared the errors with the pre test.

5.4 From the analysis, I noticed that many students still made the same mistakes.

5.5 In the post test, students did better compared to the pre test. There was a slight improvement

compared to the pre test. For SVA , there was a 10% improvement. There was a 20% of improvement

for Vocabulary and a 10% improvement for sentence structures.

6. CONCLUSION

6.1 Yes. There are some new gaps found in the post test which need to be addressed with a further

cycle of interventions. The new gaps found are spelling errors and singular plural nouns.

6.2 This particular approach helps me to be more focussed on the students weaknesses and formulate

treatment / interventions to overcome the gaps.
