Fixing Issues

The Fixing

Fixing my Thesis

What is a thesis statement?

Every paper you write should have a main point, a main idea, or central message. The

argument(s) you make in your paper should reflect this main idea. The sentence that captures

your position on this main idea is what we call a thesis statement.

How long does it need to be?

A thesis statement focuses your ideas into one or two sentences. It should present the topic of

your paper and also make a comment about your position in relation to the topic. Your thesis

statement should tell your reader what the paper is about and also help guide your writing and

keep your argument focused.

Questions to Ask When Formulating Your Thesis

Where is your thesis statement?

You should provide a thesis early in your essay -- in the introduction, or in longer essays in the

second paragraph -- in order to establish your position and give your reader a sense of direction.

Tip: In order to write a successful thesis statement:

Avoid burying a great thesis statement in the middle of a paragraph or late in the paper.

Be as clear and as specific as possible; avoid vague words.

Indicate the point of your paper but avoid sentence structures like, The point of my

Fixing My Introduction

THE ROLE OF INTRODUCTIONS

Introductions and conclusions can be the most difficult parts of papers to write. Usually when

you sit down to respond to an assignment, you have at least some sense of what you want to say

in the body of your paper. You might have chosen a few examples you want to use or have an

idea that will help you answer the main question of your assignment; these sections, therefore,

may not be as hard to write. And its fine to write them first! But in your final draft, these middle

parts of the paper cant just come out of thin air; they need to be introduced and concluded in a

way that makes sense to your reader.

Your introduction and conclusion act as bridges that transport your readers from their own lives

into the place of your analysis. If your readers pick up your paper about education in the

autobiography of Frederick Douglass, for example, they need a transition to help them leave

behind the world of Chapel Hill, television, e-mail, and The Daily Tar Heel and to help them

temporarily enter the world of nineteenth-century American slavery. By providing an

introduction that helps your readers make a transition between their own world and the issues

you will be writing about, you give your readers the tools they need to get into your topic and

care about what you are saying. Similarly, once youve hooked your readers with the

introduction and offered evidence to prove your thesis, your conclusion can provide a bridge to

help your readers make the transition back to their daily lives.

Note that what constitutes a good introduction may vary widely based on the kind of paper you

are writing and the academic discipline in which you are writing it. If you are uncertain what

kind of introduction is expected, ask your instructor.

How to write a conclusion

It is important to have a strong conclusion, since this is the last chance you have to make an

impression on your reader. The goal of your conclusion isnt to introduce any new ideas, but to

sum up everything youve written. Specifically, your conclusion should accomplish three major

goals:

Restate the main idea of your essay, or your thesis statement

Summarize the three subpoints of your essay

Leave the reader with an interesting final impression

No new information is presented in this paragraph. Instead, the writer sums up what has been

written so far and leaves the reader with a last thought. While the content of the paragraph is

very similar to the introduction, the paragraph itself is not exactly the same. This is important.

Even though the goal of the conclusion is to restate a lot of the information from the

introduction, it should sound different because the conclusions purpose is slightly different from

the introduction.

Practice writing a conclusion using the sample essay topic and the thesis statement. Remember to

support the points you have gathered. Remember to restate your thesis, summarize your

subpoints, and leave the reader with an interesting final impression.

Summary:

In fixing the writing issues I have encountered throughout my high school years, I have come to

find an learn from the following from the information. In part when creating a thesis statement, I

have to find a way to bring the readers attention into the topic I am exploring. Furthermore, I

have to bring about strong information regarding my topic, that could be personal experience,

which in some cases comes to be more beneficial as it attends to ethos. In addition, historical

information can also be added in order to bring such attention from the reader. In addition, when

starting my introduction I have to first set out in establishing my purpose in writing the paper, by

implementing the different issues I will tackle throughout my paper-the thesis must also be added

at the beginning. In siting my conclusion, I have come to learn that I must first understand from

what point of view I have written the paper for, was it to inform, or pursued. Doing so allows for

me to first reestablish my thesis and summarized the arguments proposed throughout the paper. I

is also wise to note that depending on the paper sometimes restating the thesis is not necessary as

it depends in the professors guidelines.
