About

This booklet was created by the students of the National University of Singapores
Fall 2017 Design Fiction course.

This class explores the concept of Design Fiction where science fiction - type story-
worlds are shared through the creation of interactive, futuristic objects. These novel
designs aim to suspend disbelief and invite audiences into the possible future worlds
expressed by these interactive objects. The ideas and storyworlds surrounding the
designs provoke audiences and encourage discussion about current issues that may
lead to such futures.

This semesters theme focused on Frontiers of Ecological Interaction. Students were

tasked with exploring contemporary technologies and issues arising between humani-
ty and the natural world. They then designed interactive objects, performances, and
storyworlds that highlight key concerns arising in the near future.

The Rise of the
Tree Worshippers

Humans have always taken trees for granted. Its invaluable

properties were ignored by the greed of capitalism and their
existence becomes a mere decorative element. Far away in
the future, trees began to become extinct as a result of rapid
climate change. Those who valued the life-giving properties
of tree invented what we now call the Tree of Life.

The Tree of Life is a ground breaking creation and many

bowed before it to attain miracle seeds that kept their bellies
full. Desperate and hungry civilians had little choice but to
bow down to the Tree of Life in order to survive. A monarchy
of tree worshipping devotees arose and soon after,
governments and borders gets eradicated.

Tree Guardians are given the duty to safeguard the tree and
watch over the worshipping process. Should anyone dare to
defy or destroy the Tree of Life, the Tree Guardians would
undoubtedly end their lives.

About the Project
The Tree of Life comprises of a capacitive
sensor which is a kneeling mat that activates a
servo motor which would release the miracle
seeds.

Through our fictitious storyworld, we hope to

subvert the relationship between humans and
trees and allow people to ponder on how our
actions (or the lack of) reflect the importance of
trees. We are undoubtedly reliant on the
properties of trees but yet deforestation and the
culture of wastage does not justify its value.

Sonic Bird
A ROBOTIC BIRD WHICH PUTS OUT FOREST FIRES THROUGH SOUND

In the year 2050, as the issue of deforestation worsens due to

slash-and-burn clearings, large-scale forest fires are resulting in
extreme haze, causing PSI levels in many countries to hit 500. A
lone inventor thus decides to create a savior in the form of a
sound-emitting bird.

It is the year 2050, and World War 3 has been going on for a painful 15 years, with the end nowhere in
sight. Individuals between 21-40 years of age, regardless of gender, race and religion, are drafted to
go to war to defend their countries. Braving the brutality of war, 1 in 3 soldiers lose a part of their
body - an arm, a leg - irreversible damage done to their once whole bodies.

THE R-ME
Who are we?
The government proposes a privilege for
soldiers to grow limbs organically on
trees, in order to replace the limbs they
have lost. THE R-ME works closely with
the government to build this technology
and give back to the deserving soldiers.

Providing the Best

We want to provide the best for our soldiers who have sacrificed physically, mentally and
emotionally. With organically grown limbs (OGL), soldiers do not have to keep renewing their
prosthetics (plastic prosthetics have a lifespan of 3-5 years before a renewal is required). Once the
compatible limbs are produced, its lifespan is unlimited.
Plastic Waste
THE R-ME aims to address the issue of
plastic waste generated by the production
of prosthetics. With the decomposition of
plastics taking between 10 to 30 years, the
excessive build up of plastics in landfills
is a major environmental threat to our
Mother Earth. THE R-ME's organically
produced prosthetic limbs will push the
prosthetics industry towards a completely
plastics-free production.

Our Design
After extensive research and countless trials, Project OGL
gives birth to a tree that is able to harvest organically
grown limbs - customized to the soldier's exact
measurements. Before the limb growing process, the
soldier's blood type will be keyed into the system. The
soldier then puts his/her remaining limb into the tree
hollow, in which the dimensions of the limb will be
scanned in full detail (all the way to the fingerprints). A
few seconds after the scan is complete, light and sound
outputs will be triggered. A new organic limb will be
harvested, and ready for use.

OZONE DEPLETION:
THE UGLY TRUTH
T he issue of ozone depletion is not a novel one.
For nearly a billion years, ozone molecules in the
atmosphere have protected life on Earth from the
harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays from the
sun. However, the intensive usage and release of
chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) by human activities
and heavy industries has resulted in the hasty
deterioration of Earths most precious gaseous
layer, the Ozone.
In fact, this problem has persisted for close to half
a century with no visible signs of dwindling nor
recovery. There now exists an irreparable hole in
the ozone, allowing dangerous UV rays from the
sun to penetrate the surface of Earth and reach
humans directly. Prolonged exposure to UV rays
would then result in rapid human skin degenera-
tion and the formation of skin diseases.
Due to the intensity of UV rays, common preventa-
tive measures like sunblock and shades are no
longer effective in offering protection of human
skin from sun damage. As a nal resort, humans
have completely abstained from heading outdoors
in order to minimize contact with the sun. Victims
of skin damage experience inflamed and blistered
skin, and even ruptured capillaries in extreme
cases.
The pain experienced by victims due to their skin
condition has resulted in much distress and anxi-
ety among humans as adults become depressed
over their appearance and children are suffering
from premature aging. As a mass hysteria begins
to unfold, humans too, become desperate for a
miracle cure to reverse the issue of skin damage.

Some call them killer jellyfish, but our research team has dubbed the strange,
floating lights in the water as "Bobby". Where did Bobby come from, and why
are they attacking us? To explain that, our report has to start from the very
beginning.

Our world is a place where everyone aspires to merge themselves with as

many bio-mechanical parts as possible to become the perfect human, and
this has led to the rise of many bio-mechanical engineering companies such
as Synthcorp.

Our research has shown that the recent phenomenon of these dangerous
creatures is due to the illegal dumping of humans whose bodies has rejected
the bio-mechanical implants.
Synthcorp & illegal dumping
A leading corporation in the field of bio-mechanical body parts, Synthcorp
still suffers 40% failure during the process of fusing the synthetic limbs to
actual human bodies. Failure in binding results in death of the patient, and
Synthcorp throws these bodies into the sea to avoid being fined.

Reports have shown that the rise of Bobbies have been due to these bodies,
which has been discarded together with the synthetic limbs. Marine
creatures, especially the jellyfish, has successfully fused with the discarded
synthetic limbs and started to show very aggressive behaviour.

Illegal dumping into the ocean has been harming the

marine life and ruining shorelines when the trash gets
washed up, although people rarely experience the
consequences first-hand.

Now, the jellyfish has started wrecking havoc because

of the bio-mechanical body parts that were illegally
dumped into the sea.

Super Muscular Pigs

 In Year 2100...
As humans start to enjoy more pork, there has been a growing demand for
increased pigs. To meet such demands, Genetically Modified (G.M.) pigs have
started to become a norm, taking over the "normal" pig race through natural
selection. These new pigs now reproduce faster, eat more, and more importantly
grow bigger.

The G.M. pigs were generally passive, but humans tortured them in the pig sty through abusive
methods such as poking them with an electrifying rod and whipping them with thick leather
straps. The poor G.M. pigs suffered, but overtime became immune to the abuses due to the
constant genetic evolution. They are now strong muscular pig that can withstand pain, with much
stronger bodies and they would kick humans that try to come close. Attacking humans that come
closer has become a nature reaction for them. These pigs, now much more in control, started to
take control of situation and have decided to escape their housing area for their freedom.

After escaping, the G.M. pigs ran into the nearby forest for shelter and food.
They started to reproduce more, and these G.M. pigs were everywhere.
What was more pressing was that the pigs laid their dumps all over the forest.
The manure produced is harmful for the environment as it contained high amounts
of ammonia concentration. Without proper waste handling like back at the farm,
this can lead to environmental impacts. Whenever it rained, the pigs manure would
flow down into the streams and pollute the rivers, causing the deaths of hundreds
and thousands of fishes...

Humans attempted to resolve this issue, but the number of G.M. pigs continued to increase...

Whenever the G.M. pigs see a human, they would naturally kick them (out of old habit and fear).

Humans were unable to physically come close to a pig, and yet there were not able to use any mass
destruction tool/weapon as it would damage and affect the other wildlife.

Humans are now having a pig problem!!! They are unable to control the situation!!!

For the past centuries, we have been plundering Mother Earths resources for our own.
Some say that this was Mother Earth ghting back. Grass was no longer growing,
animals had no more food. If this had continued, our species would be the next to go.
When the plague hit and wiped out all creatures and over 5 billion people, we could
only hide, containing ourselves in The Dome.

Fortunately, we have evolved. We are not the same parasitic race that lived just
decades ago. We have become self-sucient - with waste. Waste is the human races
most invaluable yet abundant resource beyond The Dome. Capable of reproducing at
an overwhelming rate of 60kg per person daily, it is no wonder that waste has become
our new innite resource. In the founding of Morel Biotech, our society has
restructured to be not only capable of utilising waste but also to be able to collect all of
it into The Waste Renery.

A rare number of us, like you, have grown immune to the viruses outside it. As a
healthy citizen, you can contribute as a waste researcher or a waste hunter to further
our causes. Morel Biotech has recently released the new and upgraded WTF (Waste To
Food) Machine, which is capable of rationing and replacing our food source and we are
looking for young and brave souls like you to be the pioneers of this frontier.
