FLUID MECHANICS-II (ME-234)

Assignment # 1
Due date: March 3, 2017

Topic covered in this assignment are i) Fluid Element Deformation ii) Vorticity & Rotationality and iii)
Reynolds Transport Theorem. During the classes in addition to theory, some video demonstrations,
results of numerical simulations and worked examples were discussed. Apply that knowledge in solving
these problems.

Pb1. What is meant by rotation of a particle? Please explain with the help of sketch.

Pb2. Consider a spherical particle in an inviscid flow (no shear stresses).) If pressure and gravitational
forces are the only forces acting on the particle. Can they cause the particle to rotate? Explain.

Pb3. Fluid flows between two parallel stationary plates. The distance between the plates is 1cm. The
velocity profile between the two plates is a parabola with a maximum velocity at the centerline of 2 cm/s.
The velocity is given by

= 2(1 4 2 )

Where y is measured from the centerline. The cross-flow component of velocity, v, is zero. There is a
reference line located 1 cm downstream. Find an expression, as a function of y, for the amount of rotation
(in radian) a fluid particle will undergo when it travels a distance of 1cm downstream.

Pb4. The velocity field for a flow is given by u = 2x2 i -3 xy j, where x and y are in meters. Determine the
velocity gradient.

Pb5. Determine the vorticity field for the velocity field given in Pb4.

Pb6. Determine the shear deformation rate of the flow given in Pb4.

Pb7. What is the purpose of Reynolds Transport Theorem?

Pb8. Gas flows into and out of the chamber as shown in Figure.

For the conditions shown, which of the following applications are true of the application of control volume
application to the continuity principle:

a) Bsys = 0
b) dBsys/dt = 0
c) . = 0

d)

e) = 0

Pb9. Three pipes steadily deliver water at 20OC to a large exit pipe in Fig. below.

The velocity V2= 5m/s, and the exit flow rate Q4 = 120m3/h, Find (a) V1, (b) V3 and (c) V4 if it is known
that increasing Q3 by 20 percent would increase Q4 by 10 percent.

Problems 10, 11 and 12 are from Cengel & Cimbala 4th Edition:

Pb10. 4-82

Pb11. 4-83

Pb12. 4-84
