LEADERSHIP
In nowadays competitive and openness era, leadership has been redefined thoroughly. Everyone could easily get any
information from the internet and get the same knowledge and opportunity to be leader. Hence, leadership nowadays isnt
merely about leadership position, but paramountly, about how to produce more next leaders. Leaders are supposed to be
enterprising, assertive, yet flexible. In order to achieve their goal, they must be able to influence their team without demeaning
them.
In the end of 2016, as an architect, I was sent by my employer to manage an Australian Embassy project in Timor Leste.
Upon my arrival there, I felt that there was a problem between my workers and clients project manager. Knowing the
importance of an approaching, I put my self in their shoes by talking and listening to my workers without mentioning any
problem. I even hung out and ate together with them to gain their credence and sincerity. As their supervisor, I showed them
the right way to do some workings, such as plastering the wall, since their product was well below Australian standart. 3 days
later, I succeeded in being their friend and leader. On the fourth day, I eventually found out that the problem was that their
wages were given to them late perpetually, which made them then work lukewarmly. Being curious, I then gathered my courage
to clarify it to the project manager. In short, we found out that the problem was communication. The foreman promised to give
the wages to his team weekly, whereas the contract with the client was monthly. Besides, the previous project supervisor didnt
communicate regularly and had the wages disbursement delayed. To overcome, I implemented my ownership sense by lending
some money to the foreman so that the workers continued working happily. Realizing the power of communication, I was
always communicating with the project manager about the projects progress so that every payment and decision were
responded immediately. Hence, the project could run smoothly until the end of the contract and I got many new networkings.
Volunteering always has my heart. In mid 2016, I joined a community called Kendari Council in South East Sulawesi. It
was a place to share about English and make volunteering program. As a newcomer among 20 members, I was asked to be a
teacher because the previous teachers should go to study abroad. Knowing that I couldnt be there for a long time, I performed
discipleship strategy. I chose 2 of them and taught them about English intensively for about 1 month. I influenced them that
they could be an expert in English if they want to learn and teach other. The more we share our knowledge, the more
understadings we get. In short, they could eventually become an English teacher. Noticing our performance there, many youth
from other communities, such as Teaching Kendari Movement, joined our teaching class. Until I left Kendari in October,2016,
that community had grown to more than 50 active members and had produced many English teachers.

NETWOKING
Network is your net worth is a catchphrase that I have learnt for a long time. When I still studied in senior high
school, Indonesia experienced global monetary crisis, which made my parents business bankrupt. To help them, I joined a
company where I sold products by presenting it to my acquaintances and asked them to be my downlines that would deliver me
to more circles of people. Besides, I was teaching from home to home as science private teacher. Communication, flexibility, and
honesty are the main keys of building networking. Being honest, I was gaining not only money and knowledge, but also
abundant lists of contacts which led me to another door of opportunity.
College is more than just a degree. Besides studying, I joined many organizations and volunteering programs, where I
made my face common among the people. Knowing that good relationship is an invaluable asset, I invested my time by
establishing interpersonal relationship with some students and lecturers through empathizing and sharing with them. In 2014, I
participated in Community Outreach Program, where we were voluntarily building the infrastructure of a village called Desa
Kesiman and sharing about cultures, for 3 weeks. The participants came from different countries. As a co-leader and spokesman,
I succeed in accommodating their ideas in meetings and being friend for them. We keep contacting each other and visiting our
village until today. In mid 2016, I was asked by one of the lecturers to be a COP 2016 committee, where I met many great and
considerate people, such as Dr. Juliana Anggono and the son of the President of Indonesia, Kaesang Pangarep. Because of those
experiences, I then got opportunity to teach in Petra Christian University as architectural design tutor in mid 2015.
In early 2015, I started working at my college friend familys company, Cv.Hokgie, as an architect. In professional field,
establishing a solid networking became crucial. In order to gain their trust, I even hung out and ate together with my workers.
Moreover, I met many clients, building materials vendors, and engineers. I established close relationship with them by asking
them to join me in recreational and sport activities. By doing that, they felt that it was not just about money. In the end of 2016,
I was sent to Timor leste to supervise Australian Embassy Project where I met even more experts in and outside my field which
enlarged my networking. Recently, I just got a new client, who turned out to be my private students family in 2015. It proves
that my networking makes many projects fall onto my lap.
When I go back from the UK later, I would keep participating perpetually in community service programs, such as COP.
In addition, I, with some of Chevening g and my acquaintances from Petra Christian University, would make a creative
community organization for young people, where they can share, develop, propose their idea about green sustainable buildings,
and cooperate with governments and developers to implement green design throughout Indonesia.

COURSES
Outline why you have selected your chosen three university courses, and explain how this relates to your previous academic
or professional experience and your plans for the future.

World is better off if humans do not exist is an ideology believed by Anti-Natalism people. They think that the
existence of humans only harms the nature. I certaintly disagree with them since I believe that humans are equipped with
intelligence to overcome the damage dealt towards the nature. Nevertheless, it is undeniable that the development of
infrastructures corrupts our nature by replacing the green fertile areas with concrete, exploting nature resources unfairly, and so
on.
My experience in teaching for 1 semester in Petra Christian University and my role as an architect and on-site project
supervisor are my most prominent reasons in choosing master degree concerning energy efficiency and sustainable building. In
those opportunities, I realized that building consumes a large amount of energy for lighting, air conditioning, and electricity (40%
of total global energy according to UNEP). Concerning those facts, I have chosen 3 courses at 3 different universities:
Sustainable Mega Building at Cardiff University, Low Energy Building Services Engineering at Loughborough University, and
Building Services Engineering at Brunel University.
My first choice is Sustainable Mega Building at Cardiff University. It focuses more on the sustainable planning of high-
rise building including the principle, the design, and the performance of it. I will learn how to design low-carbon and low-energy
high rise building by undergoing creative teaching ways, such as seminars, workshops, study visits, project works, group
tutorials, and many more. Moreover, the cutting edge facilites of artficial skydome and environmental simulation software
programmes will foster my understanding about climate comfort and renewable energy. I personally prefer this first option
since Indonesia is a developing country heading to the thrive of the high-rise buildings development. Thus , as an architect, I
could help the Indonesia Government to design green high-rise building later in order to preserve our nature and environment.
The next alternative is Building Services Engineering with Sustainable Energy at Brunel University. It provides in-depth
knowledge of air conditioning, electrical system, lighting, ventilation, and even acoustic design in building in order to cut down
energy usage in building. I suppose all of it will be very usefull for me later since I could eliminate the energy usage in many
aspects of building through my design.
The last but not least is Low Energy Building Services Engineering at Loughborough University. I will acquire knowledges
about airflow, thermal adjustment, electricity system, and their correlation with renewable energy. It has fascinating facilities,
such as solar simulator, hygrothermal chambers, and controllable environmental room. Additionally, I believe that Its lustrous
experiences in environmental research prove its competence in this area.
I believe that the qualification from one of those universities could advance my knowledge and personality. As an
architect and teacher, I know that design, understanding, and technology could help us to reduce the impact of our development
to Indonesias environment as a developing country, by producing sustainable designs, sharing my concerns in universities,
running youth green designer community, and conducting community outreach program for underdeveloped areas with my own
networking and Chevening Scholars.
