57. Galileos great contribution to astronomy 58.

was to use a newly invented optical
instrument called the telescope in 1611, in
order to provide observations with which to
challenge Aristotelian and Ptolemaic theory.
Galileo did not invent the telescope himself,
but as soon as he heard of its invention, he
set about making his own superior version.
-------. However, Galileo developed an
instrument with superior magnifying power
of about twenty times, which he turned
towards the heavens with spectacular
results. These results were published in two
books, The Starry Messenger (1610) and
Letters on Sunspots (1613).
A) These works also made it clear that Galileo
favoured the Copernican astronomy
B) A simple example will show how Galileo
employed his telescope against Aristotelian
science
C) The earliest telescopes, made in the
Netherlands, magniPed only by a factor of
three
D) Jupiter was accompanied by four satellites,
which showed that such motion was
possible
E) Galileo was aware that his advocacy of the
new astronomy was not accepted in
scientiPc circles
