economic factor (1) .. all other considerations in American and British cinema, and was likely to
have universal (2) .. sooner or later. In the space of twenty-five years, the cost of every (3) .. of
making films had risen by as much as four hundred per cent. In the same period, audiences had (4)
.. to as little as one sixth of what they had previously been. It was clear that the old ways of
financing production were no longer (5) .. . Yet the established cinema industries showed
perilously little ability to (6) .. to the new circumstances. There were attempts to reduce costs but
they were hindered at every turn by the trade unions efforts to (7) .. the interests of their
members. Attempts made to find new (8) .. to attract a wider and a different public (9) ..
unsuccessful. It became increasingly difficult to foresee whether a film was likely to be profitable,
and film companies came to depend upon the occasional exceptional success to (10) .. the losses
on the larger number of films which failed to recoup their production costs.

THE STORY OF FIRE
There is a sense in (0) which the story of fire is also that of the Earth itself. Moreover, (1)
..myths and legends are to be believed, it is also the story of ourselves.
(2) .. varying degrees, fire has been an environmental presence during almost the whole span
of terrestrial life. There did, of course, exist a time when the Earth did not burn. In (3).. for
combustion to (4) .. place, both oxygen and plant life are required in sufficient quantities,
because together with heat, these make up the prerequisites of fire.
Even on (5) .. a distinctive planet as ours, the story of fire is special. Fire is unique to Earth and
(6) .. exploitation unique to humanity. Some of the components of combustion on other planets
have (7) .. to light during space exploration, but no other has them all, at (8) . not in a
context where the explosive reaction that goes by the name fire can occur. Similarly, while all
species modify their immediate environments, only humans can, within limits, start and stop fire (9)
.. will. Some organisms breed, forage or hunt in or around fires, but it is humans alone who are
(10) .. of kindling it, sustaining it and spreading it. Only humanity, therefore, can lay claim to
the title keeper of the vital flame.
