Areas of Study/Performance
Your student can expect to use multiple strategies to build on
their current reading/math lives. Every student that walks through
my door is a powerful learner! We just work on giving them more
tools to use. The goal of this class is to help your student become
an on-level reader/mathematician, which means reading or
computing at a 9th grade level or above. We strive to achieve this
goal through time spent in a text of their choice, small group
guided meetings, and one-on-one conferences. We interact with a
variety of resources so your student can be successful in real life,
not just in a classroom. Students will build upon previous skills in
analysis, writing, and presenting as well as prepare for the district
and college assessments, which are given in the second semester.
Students will also practice writing in various modes.
My goal is to meet the needs of each individual learner so each
student can achieve his or her full academic potential. A variety of
strategies will be used to build skills, as well as promote a safe
learning environment that values all students.
Please be advised: your scholars schedule may indicate
Math/English Enrichment, but your scholars needs may alternate
between reading and math. This will not affect credits or
graduation.
Supply ListStudents should have these items each day:
agenda or personal calendar
notebook paper (no colored paper, please)
writing utensils including pencil and blue or black ink pens
a red or colored pen for editing
hi-liters, post-its as needed
Head phones
Access to email to send homework assignments
Self-selected reading material
Reading and Math texts as applicable
Books for Class
A variety of texts will be available for study during class and will
change depending on your students individual needs. Not every
student will be in the same text at the same time, and
instructional texts will rarely go home.
Instead of homework that might frustrate a student and impede
progress, you would be most served by reading any book of your
choosing for pleasure at home each night. Dont worry about it
being at grade level, just read a book! Read to your siblings,
read to your family, read anything and everything from Captain
Underpants to Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Building stamina
with regard to reading will benefit you for the rest of your life.
Students are also responsible for bringing some readings/math
material with them every day. This reading material can be any
genre, and any format (from a magazine to a comic book) as long
as it is school appropriate. Reading material is always fair game to
be used in assessments or assignments, so it is very important
students bring something each and every day. Students who do
not bring reading material on any day that school is in session
owe Mrs. Harvey 50 push-ups each day the reading material is not
brought. (Not really, I just want to see how many people read this
syllabus.)
Classroom Expectations
1.)Arrive on time.
2.)Put forth YOUR BEST effort.
3.) Come prepared with any necessary items or homework.
4.) Be respectful follow directions the first time, refraining from
behavior that is annoying or disruptive to fellow classmates or to
the teacher
5.) NO cell phones unless directed by the teacher used
immediately for instructional purposes
6.) NO food or drinks except clear water bottles with a top away
from equipment
Consequences for Failing to Follow Policies: 1st Time verbal
warning2nd Time phone call or email home; home visit3rd
Time disciplinary referral
*Major violations will be dealt with by the administration,
regardless of the above sequence of consequences
Late Work
Work that is not ready at the beginning of the class due will
receive no greater than 90% credit; work submitted after the class
period is over, but on the day it was due is still late, and will
receive no greater than 90% credit. Work submitted after it was
originally due will be docked 10% each day it is late. Work
submitted more than one week (5 school days) late will NOT
receive any credit and parent or guardian will be notified!
For example, Fergles assignment was due 2nd hour. Fergle turned
in his paper 4th hour from study hall. Fergles paper is late, and he
will receive 90% of the points he earned. If Fergle would have
made a 100/100, the most he could get is a 90/100. If Fergle
would have made a 70/100, he would be docked 10% of the 70
which leaves him with a 63/100.
Work turned in...
Late but same day = -10% 1 day late = -20%2 days late = -30%3
days late = -40%
4 days late = -50%5 days late = -60%6 or more days late = not
accepted
* Were applicable, we follow the district/school policy regarding
making up assignments after an absence.
Progress Reports and Grades
Students will be notified of their grade weekly in class or by
special request. Grades for an intervention class will be
determined in a number of ways, including but not limited to:
- Performance on specific skill-based tasks (ie: assessments after
weve practiced a specific skill)
- Participation during small group instruction as were learning a
specific skill- Individual vocabulary or reading log responsibilities
Since each student is working at their own pace, a schedule or
documentation of academic focus for each week in advance is
impossible. Students advance as they are ready and not before.
Students working at a similar level will be instructed via
independent exploration in self-selected texts and via whole and
small-group instruction. I am willing to help in any way that I can,
and am willing to clarify any questions about requirements for
this course.

Incorporating the visual aspect of literature/mathematics is very helpful to
many students. As permission waivers are necessary for works found
outside of the English department or our school library, I am including a
waiver for the use of works that might fall into this category. Please be
assured, we will NOT watch movies to replace instruction, but only enhance
what we are studying in the classroom. Author biographies, historical era
clips, speeches, Romeo and Juliet (1996, and 1968) clips are a few
examples.
