A few house rules

We love our home and you are most welcome here. We ask, please, that you treat it like you would
your own home.
No pets please.
You are welcome to smoke outside on the balconies. Out of consideration to our non-smoking
guests, please do not smoke anywhere inside the house or near open doors. Burning incense is fine.
Please keep noise levels down between 22:00 and 06:00 because our neighbours live very close by.
Access keys: You will receive two sets of guest keys to unlock the front door. The key rings also
have remote control units with buttons as follows:
Green arms and disarms the alarm (see Alarm below)
Blue is the panic button (see Panic button below)
Safe: There is a small safe for storing your valuables. It is installed behind the door in the second
bedroom. You can choose a 3 to 8 digit PIN code to operate it. We recommend using a sequence of
numbers from your telephone or cell phone number, either forwards or backwards. Some people
find this easier to remember.
When you arrive, the safe door should be open with the door bolts extended. To program a new PIN
code, find the small red button at the back of the safe door, near the hinge. Press it and you will
hear two beeps. Enter the PIN code you wish to use, followed by the hash or pound # key.
To test your new PIN code with the door open, rotate the doorknob of the safe so the bolts are
extended. Enter your PIN code followed by the star key*. You should hear a click and the green
LED light should illuminate. You should now be able to rotate the doorknob to withdraw the bolts.
If not, reprogram your PIN code starting with the small red button as described above.
To lock the safe, enter your PIN, turn the doorknob and withdraw the bolts as described above.
Wait until the green LED light switches off. Close the door and turn the doorknob. The door should
now be locked. Please test the doorknob to make sure the safe is secure.
To open the safe, enter your PIN code followed by the star key*. As above, you should hear a click
and the green LED light should illuminate. You should now be able to rotate the doorknob to
withdraw the bolts and open the door.
If you forget your PIN code please contact Princess or Ian.
At the end of your stay please leave the safe door open with the bolts extended.
Alarm: The house is fitted with an alarm. When the alarm is triggered a signal is sent to
City Bowl Armed Response who will send an armed guard to the house within a few minutes. The
alarm is armed (set) with the green button on the remote control on your guest key. When you
press the button the alarm will give a loud BEEP to acknowledge. One BEEP: alarm is armed. To
disarm the alarm, press the green button again. The alarm will give two BEEPS. Two BEEPS:
disarmed.
Stay Mode: The alarm can be put into Stay Mode to protect you at night. In Stay Mode you can
access the bedrooms and bathroom. You cannot open the front door or go upstairs or the alarm will
sound. To put the alarm in Stay Mode, go to the alarm keypad next to the front door. Find the
STAY button and press and hold until you hear four short, soft beeps. Stay Mode is ON. To disable
Stay Mode, press the green button on the remote control on your guest key. The alarm keypad will
beep softly and Stay Mode is switched OFF. Careful: Do not press the green button again or you
will arm the alarm.
Cancelling a false alarm: If there is a false alarm, or if the alarm is triggered unintentionally,
City Bowl Armed Response will ask for a password to cancel the alarm. We will send you the
password shortly before you arrive.

Security
Balcony doors: You are welcome to open the doors upstairs. When you are not using them,
please keep the security gates locked at all times. We have had walk-in incidents where people
have climbed up from street level and helped themselves to personal belongings. Please take
care of your valuables.
Car crime: Car crime is an ongoing problem in many parts of South Africa. We dont want our
guests to become part of the statistics. Unfortunately we cannot accept responsibility for
damages or losses. To avoid the risk of car crime completely, it may be best to use public
transport and taxis during your stay. We would be glad to help with arranging public transport
or with finding the best taxi or shuttle services. Just let us know, or speak to Princess or Ian.
There is also some public transport information below.
If you do decide to use a car, please make sure you leave nothing at all inside whenever you
park it. Also, we recommend leaving the glove compartment and other enclosed areas inside
open and visible. This is to avoid break-ins for the sake of curiosity. If your wheel caps can be
removed easily, it may be best to remove them to be safe. The same goes for anything else of
value that is not attached to the vehicle.
Begging: In South Africa there are many people who are poor. It is not necessarily anyones
fault. You may encounter people who knock on the front door to ask for food or money. Please
never give any money as there is a risk that the money will not be used for food. Homeless
people who receive money may also be encouraged to come back and ask for more. Whatever
you decide, please be very careful. You may decide to speak to someone through the bedroom
window if you prefer not to open the front door. If you would like to offer more help you can
visit http://www.haven.org.za/get-informed/you-can-help/.
Internal keys: There is a black metal box in the cupboard under the kitchen sink. The key to the
box hangs on a magnet under the sink, out of sight. Reach under the sink, towards the right, and
you will feel it. Please keep the box locked and the key hidden in its place when you are not using
them. Inside the box there is a set of keys for the upstairs doors and gates. As you enter the
upstairs area, the gates and keys are, from left to right:
Gate 1 (to the small balcony) which opens with a key on a blue carabiner clip
Gate 2 with a key on a purple carabiner clip
Gate 3 with a key on a pink carabiner clip, and
Gate 4 with a key on a green carabiner clip.
There are two keys on each carabiner clip. One is for the security gate and the other is for
the door.
Please keep the keys safe and return the internal keys to the storage box when you are not
using them. We estimate that replacing all the locks could cost in the region of 100. We
reserve the right to recover the actual cost from the security deposit if they are lost.
Air conditioner: It can get fairly hot over the summer months. You are welcome to use the air
conditioners as often as you like. There is one in the main bedroom and another in the kitchen.
They both work with remote control units which we leave nearby for you. We ask that you consider
switching the air conditioners off if you are not at home, please. This will help to save on our
electricity bill. But this is up to you.
Shower: We try to keep the bathroom walls dry by opening the top window while showering. If you
could help us by doing the same we would be very grateful. But this is up to you.
When you loosen the catch, the top window will slide down. To close the window again, please use
the broomstick which should be in the shower. The broomstick has a sponge on one end. Gently
position the sponge end at the top of the window frame, near the centre, and use it to push the
frame upwards. Once the frame is all the way up, keep one hand on the broomstick to steady the
frame. You can now close the catch again with your other hand.
If you have any trouble at all closing the window please let Princess or Ian know. We recommend
that you keep this window closed when you are not at home, for security reasons and to help the
air conditioner to keep the house cool in summer. But the choice is yours.
Airport transfer: If you need a transfer back to the airport, Princess and Ian can help. The price is
around R300 for one person and R350 for two. Speak to them and they will arrange it.

Have a wonderful stay!

Petra and Paul Papenfus

Where to find us
The correct address to put in the GPS/Sat Nav for our house is
65 Bloem Street, Schotsche Kloof, Cape Town.
You will also find us on Google Maps using the same address. Some of our guests have struggled to
find our house, but if you have a look at the map below, and perhaps print it, then you should not
have any problems.
Here are more detailed directions:
Take the N1/N2 into Cape Town. Continue over the first traffic
light. The main entrance to the V&A Waterfront will be on the
right. You will be entering Buitengracht Street, also known as
the M62. After about three more traffic lights and 1.5 km, look
out for the brown sign for the Noon Gun across the street on
your right. Here is a picture:==========================
This is the corner of Buitengracht and Bloem Street. Turn right
up the hill. The road is very steep. Put your vehicle into first
gear and drive carefully. You should not have any problems.
After the steepest part of the hill our house is another 40 metres
further along Bloem Street. Look out for the green house with
the red door on your left. Below is a picture.
Please also see the map on the next page.

Public Transport
The MyCiti bus travels from the airport. In the city it stops at the Civic Centre from where you can
choose other routes. The standard fare is R88 per person one way during peak hours. The route to
get to our home is the 101 (Vredehoek - Gardens - Civic Centre). The stop you want is called Upper
Long. You will be in Long Street (see Long Street on the map below). From there it is a short but
steep walk up the hill to our home.
