CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 GENERAL:

My topic is a BOOK STALL. The total area is 2128m2(22905.6014ft2).It is a

commercial building but it also helps in promoting the literacy among peoples. Book stall is
place where all the books are available in all languages for all community people. It is place
where peoples know about the surrounding through their knowledge.

1.2 CLASSIFICATION

1.3 2 IMPORTANCE AND NEEDS OF THE PROJECT

In this circumstances there are many book stalls are there but there is no bigger book stalls
with all facilities . So that I have used to provide the multi storey book stall in that area. .It will
fulfil the sufficiency of the youngsters need of studies. To minimise difficulties faced by the
book reading peoples and childrens too. This place can help all age peoples to strengthen their
reading power.
1.4 OBJECTIVE

To eradicate illiteracy among village peoples and to minimize the searching of

books at various places.

To know peoples about their surrounding world and to enrich their social
knowledge

1.5 SCOPE

It helps us to enrich our design knowledge and to know about the design of all elements
of the building which is to be designed. By this we know a lot about design of various structures
which can hep us in future.

1.6 LOCATION

It was located at the opposite of Government Girls Arts and Science College,
Pudukkottai. It is just a kilometer from bustand. This place has sufficient transportation
facilities because the site is located near the Pudukkottai bus stand. It is very useful for that
area peoples and youngsters and surroundings also. The site is convenient for all the peoples
who came from that surrounding. It is a very peaceful environment for studying. It is very

ANALYSIS AND DESIGN

3.1 ANALYSIS

3.1.1 INTRODUCTION

Analysis is the determination of effect of loads on the structures when applied on it.
This will compute the structure deformations, internal forces, support reactions, stresses and
its stability. This computation will help us to design the main components of a building.

3.1.2 TYPES OF ANALYSIS

1. Slope deflection method

2. Moment distribution method
3. Substitute frame method
4. Kanis method

3.1.2.1 SELECTION OF ANALYSIS

From the above mentioned type of analysis , for this project kanis method of
analysis is taken.

3.1.3 TYPES OF LOADS

1. Imposed load
2. Dead load
3. Wind load

3.1.3.1 LOAD COMBINATIONS

1. L.L +D.L
2. L.L+D.L+W.L

3.1.4 CALCULATION OF LOADS

FEM =Wl2/12 = (49.875x62) = 149.62 KN/m2

Stiffness, k (6m) = 4EI/L = 4EI/6 = 0.67EI

Stiffness, k (3.048m) = 4EI/L = 4EI/3.048= 1.31EI

3.1.5 ANALYSIS OF FRAME

3.2 DESIGN AND DETAILING

(DESIGNED BASED ON THE LIMIT STATE METHOD)

3.2.1 DESIGN OF SLAB

Given Data:

Shorter span, LX = 6m
Longer span, LY = 8m
Width of support, b = 230 mm
Grade of concrete, fck = M30
Grade of steel, fy = Fe500
Slenderness Ratio, LY / LX = 8/6 = 1.33 < 2
Hence, it is a two way continuous slab.
Edge condition: Two adjacent edges discontinuous.

1. Depth of slab:
Assume D=200mm
use 10 mm dia bars.
Effective depth, d = 200 - 20 -10/2
d = 175 mm

2. EFFECTIVE SPAN:

i. clear span + effective depth = 6+ 0.175 = 6.175 m

ii. c/c between supports = 6+ 0.23 =6.23 m
Take whichever is less, l = 6.175m
3. LOAD CALCULATION:

Self-weight of slab = (0.200 x25 x1 ) = 5kN/ m2

Live load = 6 kN/m2
Floor finishing load = 1 kN/m2
Total service load, w = 12 kN/ m2
Design ultimate load, wu = 1.5 w = (1.5x12) = 18 kN/ m2

4. ULTIMATE DESIGN MOMENTS:

From Table: 26, IS 456-2000

x = 0.052 ; y = 0.037

Mx = x x wu x lx2 = 0.052x18x6.1752
Mx = 35.69 kN.m
My = y x wu x lx2 = 0.037x18x6.1752
My = 25.39 kN.m
5. SHEAR FORCE:

Vu = wulx / 2
= (18x6.175)/2
Vu = 55.58kN

6. CHECK FOR DEPTH:

Mulim = (0.138 fck b d2)

35.69 x106 = (0.138x30x1000xd2)
d = 92.84mm < 175mm
Hence, it is safe.
7. REINFORCEMENT CALCULATIONS:

f y . Ast

Ast = 491.87mm2

Minimum reinforcement for edge stirrups:

Ast = (0.12/100)xbD
= (0.12/100) x 1000 x 175
Astmin = 210 mm2
Use 10 mm dia bars
Spacing, s = 1000x ast / Ast
= 1000 x 78.54 / 210
s =374 mm
Provide 10 mm dia bars @ 300 mm c/c in all edge stirrups.
For distributors,
Use 8 mm bars,
Spacing, S = 1000 x 50.26 / 210
s= 239.33mm
Provide 8 mm dia bars @ 230 mm c/c
Torsional reinforcement:
Area of reinforcement in each 4 layer = 3/4 x max Ast in mid span
= 3/4 x 491.87
Ast = 368.9mm2
Use 8 mm dia bars,
Spacing, S= 1000 x 50.26 / 368.9
s= 136.24mm
Provide 8 mm dia bars @ 130 mm c/c
Length of torsional reinforcement = 1/5 x 6000 = 1200 mm
8. CHECK FOR SHEAR STRESS:

V = Vu / bd
= 55.58 x103/ (1000 x175)
V = 0.32N/mm2
Pt = 100 Ast / bd
= (100x 491.87)/ (1000 x 175)
Pt= 0.28%
Refer table 19 0f IS 456-2000
K = 1.2 , c = 0.38
Kc =0.45
v < kc
Hence the shear stresses are within safe permissible limit

9. CHECK FOR DEFLECTION :

(l/d) basic = 28
(l/d)provided = 6000/175= 34.28
(l/d)max= (L/D) basic x kt x kc
from fig. 4 of IS 456-2000,
Kt =1.3 for pt = 0.28%
(l/d)max = 28 x 1 x 1.3=36.4
(l/d)provided < (l/d)max
Hence, it is safe.
3.2.2 DESIGN OF BEAM

1. GIVEN DATA:

Span of beam = 6m

fy = 500 N/mm2

fck = 30 N/mm2

Assume the beam section as 300 x 450 mm

2. LOAD CALCULATION:

Live load on beam = 6kN/m2

Self-weight of beam = 5 kN/m

Floor finish = 1 kN/m2

Total load on beam = 15.5kN/m2

3. MOMENT AND SHEAR FORCE:

Mu = 105.81 kN.m [ from manual analysis ]

Vu = 159.52 kN.m [ from manual analysis]

Mu = 23.25x62/8

Mu = 104.62 KN.m

Thus, Mu < Mu lim [ 104.62< 105.81 ]

Hence, it is under reinforced section.

Ast:

104.62106 = 0.87x415x 450[1 ]
30300450

104.62x106 = 195750Ast 24.167Ast2

Ast = 575.32 mm2

NO. OF BARS:

use 12mm dia bars

n = Ast/ast

= 575.32/(/4x122)

n=5.08 6 no.s

Provide 12mm dia bars as tension reinforcement.

4. CHECK FOR SHEAR STRESS:

Vu = 69.75 kN.m

V = Vu / bd = 0.52 N/mm2

Pt = 100 Ast / bd = 0.5%

Refer table 19 0f IS 456-2000

c =0.5

v > c

Hence the shear stresses are within safe permissible limit

5. MINIMUM SHEAR REINFORCEMENT:

(l/d)provided = 6000/450= 13.33
(l/d)max= (L/D) basic x kt x kc
from fig. 4 of IS 456-2000,

Kt =1.08 for pt = 0.5%

(l/d)max = 28 x 1.08 x 1=21.36
(l/d)provided < (l/d)max
Hence, it is safe.

Assume a detention period of 12 hours
Tank capacity required = (3.5 x12)/24 = 1.75m3
Sludge storage at 0.0708m3/capita( for a cleaning period of 2 years)
= 100x 0.078

Scum storage at 0.01m3/capita = 100x0.01 = 1m3
Sludge digestion = 0.03m3/capita = 100x0.03= 3m3
Add 25% extra for future expansion= (25/100)x 1.75 =0.44m3
Total design capacity = 1.75 + 7.8 + 1 + 3 + = 13.55m3
Let the depth of the liquid be 1.8m
Plan area of the tank = 13.55/1.8 = 7.5 m2
Provide tank of dimensions 5.7 x2.1 m
Plan area = 7.6m2
Free board = 0.4m
Total depth of the tank = 1.8+0.4 = 2.2m
Size of the tank = 5.7x2.1x2.2m
Liquid capacity of m3 may be adopted.
b) Design of dispersion trench:
Flow in the trench = 3.5 + 0.44 = 4 m3
Assume the width of dispersion trench = 1 m
Length of trench required = 4/(0.204x1) =19.60 m.
Maximum length is 30m; so provide the 1trenches of each 20m length.

ESTIMATION, COSTING AND SCHEDULING
4.1 INTRODUCTION
Estimation or estimating is the process of calculating the quantities and cost of
various items of works involved in the project. Estimation is done with reference to the
already prepared plan or the details collected. Estimation is the major part of this project.
This can be obtained by calculating the earthwork, concrete in foundation, damp proof
course, masonry and up to painting should be calculated. Accuracy in estimate is very
important.
