Inquiry Based Learning
Observational Notes
Classroom setup and seating plan:

Grey rectangle represents the teachers desk.

Black line is the board.
All other rectangles represent student desks with two students per desk.
Observational Notes explanation:
The first three observational notes depict in class observations that aim to take down as much
of what is occurring in the class as possible. There are no timestamps due to this reason as
well, however it does occur in chronological from top of the page to the bottom. The
observational notes also include the observers thoughts on what is occurring in the class and
possible improvements. The notes also tried to identify any behavioural management
strategies that were in place for the class. The fourth observational note was also done on the
day of observations and is a more tailored draft that aims at relating what was observed to the
three codes of behavioural, emotional, and cognitive engagement.
Codes:
During the literature review, three possible codes were identified to help ultimately determine
is students were engaged, and if this engagement was because of inquiry based learning or if
inquiry based learning increased the level of engagement. The codes were as follows:
Behavioural: (student participation and conduct)
Students were very well behaved whilst in class. There were almost no disruptions by
students. No students were observed to be using phones and only spoke to each other
quietly whilst the teacher was talking. A reason behind this could be the positive
behaviour for learning structure that the school had in place.
Teacher seemed to have constant control over the classroom.
Students participated in all task given and teacher asked for evidence of all completed
and glued in tasks at the end of the lesson.
Emotional: (student interest and reactions to teacher and content)

Students reactions to activities given by the teacher were received positively by the
students with no negative reactions.
Almost all students at all times were looking directly at the teacher whilst they were
talking and were observed nodding in understanding as to the content the teacher was
delivering.
Cognitive: (student mental exertion)
Students actively questioning content. Seen through year 8 observation where
students were unsure on the definition of adaptation but not habitat but then
through some guidance, were able to relate them and gain the definition for
adaptation.
Observed students also writing in their books things that they deem interesting that
the teacher says, but does not necessarily state this must be written in your books.

Group Contribution Name: Hayden Newell 17665881

Explain your contribution to the group:

How did you contribute to:

Identifying group and individual topics?

Helped identify the topic with the group, helped determine topics and allowed for group members
to choose which topic they wanted.

Developing and implementing the intervention?

Meet as a group to decide the intervention and all contributed to its design and structure.

Collecting and analyzing preliminary data?

Collected my own individual data, but also organized for two members of the group to collect their
data through my school/teachers that I knew.

Developing the research presentation?

It was my idea to use the voicethread website to host the presentation as I thought it would be
easier for everyone. Also, met as a group to help decide who speaks when and what part they wish
to speak on.

How did you interact with the other group members?

My interactions were always professional and kind to ensure that no inner turmoil was caused.
