SLEEPING SENSOR FOR VEHICLES

Abstract: In this article we will talk about a sensor developed for help tired drivers to
will not crash them cars. We used a Arduino micro controller, a proximity sensor
called Sonar, LED lights and DC engines. The objectives of this project, is create a
tool to help tired drivers and avoid accidents, the tool should be accessible and
cheap. It was developed by a Arduino programed in C program language that send
commands to the sensor and the sensor send a signal to turn on the lights depending
on the distance. When we finished this project, we can see how the tecnology can
help the people, because with a simple and cheap tool, we can allert the drivers and
keep them safe.

1 INTRODUCTION

We use to the project a micro controller board called Arduino. The board is a
eletronic prototyping plataform of free hardware, projected with a micro controller
Atmel AVR unic board, with support input/output. A pattern programation language
which is essentialy C/C++. The objective of the project is create tools there are low
cost, flexibles, easy to use and acessible, for everyone can use.
The Project started in the city Ivre, Italy, in 2003, looking for school projects
have been a low cost in comparation to the others prototyping systems. The sucess
was be sinalized by mentioned honor in the digital communites in 2006, for the Prix
Arts Eletronic, and they sold 50.000 bords for october, 2008.
In this Project we use an Arduino board, a sensor called here Sonar, is a
proximity sensor and LED lights to sinalizate the distance.

2 OBJECTIVES

With this project, we looking for create a tool to avoid accidents by lack of
attention while drive, this is by sleep, phone, tiredness, etc. That tool works with the
sensor, when the sensor detect the obstacle depended of the distance they turn on
one of the lights, the Red for short distances, Yellow for midium distances and Green
for big distances.

3 THEORIC FUNDAMENTION

The engineering company in the German, Hoffmann + Krippner has designed a

sensor that perceives the state of alertness of the driver. This sensor is located inside
the steering wheel and recognize when someone is fatigued, feeling sick, or falls a
sleep while driving. What the wheel does is to monitor the pressure of the hands of
driver.
This sensor, called Sensofoil, consists of a thin strip applied to the inside of
the steering wheel, below the leather or other material that is. This strip consists of
thin layers, with a low electrical current that travels through the layers.
The technology is based on the fact that when people are driving and stay
alert, they apply constant pressure on the steering wheel or move the hands around
it. If the driver fall a sleep or have a heart attack this pressure will decrease and your
hands are moving less. The sensor in the interior of the steering wheel can sense
when the hands are moving less, when it happen the sensor starting a security
protocol to wake up the driver or take corrective measures.

The project Arduino started in the city of Ivre, Italy, in 2003, with the objective of
interacting with school projects so as to have a smaller budget than other prototyping
systems available at the time. The idea of Arduino is to enable developers to create
specific codes to run on an electronic basic circuit. From this codes, the Arduino will
enable the creation of tools and smart electronics.
Electric circuits made in the base of the Arduino can receive many kinds of
signals, sensors can be added in the prototypes. In addition, projects done in the
Arduino can take advantage of such signals to interact with other devices. With this it
is possible to control lights, motors and other functions of compatible devices. With
the Arduino it is possible to build small projects and prototypes easily and with low
cost.

In our project we use another ways to allert the driver. But, the ideia is the same to
the Sensofoil, we use the LED because the color can be wake up the driver before
the accident and if it will not happen the system can control the vehicle and keep the
driver safe.

4 MATERIALS AND METHODS

We choose the Arduino because it is accessible and can be controlled by the

codes made in a simple programming language. The sensor used in the project was
the HC SR-04, called Sonar.
The sonar is a proximity sensor that can detect objects at a certain distance
from where it is installed. In the project we did the demonstration of the use of the
sensor with the board, in a prototype boat out of styrofoam, that had two DC motors,
LED lamps in the colors red, yellow and green, and some resistors for that the
system be more efficient, everything was powered by batteries of 1.5 volts connected
in parallel.

5 DEVELOPMENT

The project code was done for that the sensor could identify the obstacles at
certain distances and obey certain commands. How the prototype was developed on
a small scale the distances used were small, to work better.
The distances that we used were, for a distance equal to or less than 30
centimeters green LED turn on and the system would continue to work normally, this
was used with the purpose of just alerting the driver for that there is an obstacle at a
close distance. For the distances longer than 30 centimeters the board do not turn on
any light. The yellow LED was used to distances that were between 29 centimeters
and 15 centimeters, and the system would continue to work normally. The red LED
turn on only when the distance was less than 14 centimeters, and in case if there is
no reaction of the driver, for example switching off the motor or deviate from the
obstacle, when the distance was equal to or less than 10 centimeters the board
would control the system by preventing the accident. In our case the control that best
applied to reality would be to turn off one of the engines, the boat would make a
curve deviating thus from the obstacle.

6 CONCLUSION

With the development of the project, we look for create a technology cheap
and accessible that can help drivers to prevent accidents. We did several searches
until we find the best way to keep the driver alert for a relatively low price. How has
been shown already, there are systems that use other ways to detect driver fatigue
and take the steps necessary so that it stay safe.
The project can be improved so that it has other means to alert the driver, be it
a beep, vibration in the steering wheel, etc. In the future with the advancement of
technology we can create more tools for vehicles, be the cars or boats to become
increasingly more safe for drivers, and to another people.
