Programme Notes
Programme Felix Mendelssohn Overture to Fingals Cave
Also known as The Hebrides and The Solitary Island, Overture to Fingals Cave illustrates Mendelssohns journey to the Western Highlands where, on the
island of Staffa in Scotland, the composer encountered the wonderous sea cave.
e Mendelssohn: Overture to Fingals Cave, Op. 26
The overture opens with a theme played by the violas, cellos, and bassoons, depicting the darkness and loneliness of a cave. The second theme conjures the

e Smetana: Die Moldau movement of the sea through a wavelike effect created by the violins. As this theme develops, one can almost hear the wind and seabirds, and the ocean
crashing against the shore.

e Vivaldi: Violin Concerto in E flat La Tempesta Di Mare, RV 253 As the music subsides, the solitude is restored and the atmosphere of the cave recreated. The piece ends with a brilliant coda with a tone-picture of the sea
and the cave against the backdrop of waves.

(Christian Tan, violin) Mendelssohn, who wrote the piece in 1830, was a German composer, pianist, organist, and conductor. He is now considered as one of the most popular
composers of the Romantic era. Mendelssohns 200th birth anniversary in 2009 was celebrated all over the world.
Intermission
e Dvorak: Symphony No. 8 in G major, Op. 88 Bedrich Smetana Die Moldau
Czech composer Smetana was one of the most nationalistic composers of his time, even regarded as a hero in his homeland. A gifted pianist, he was a child
prodigy, giving his first performance at the age of six.
Allegro Con Brio
Adagio Smetanas Vltava (The Moldau) is part of the composers ode to his nation, Ma Vlast (My Fatherland), a cycle of six tone poems. Throughout the composition
of the cycle, Smetana had gone completely deaf. Each piece in the cycle depicts people and places in the Czech legends and history.
Allegretto Grazioso
Allegro ma non troppo The river Moldau is recreated in Smetanas tone poem. Through surging music, Smetana recreates vivid scenes along the riverbanks, the Moldaus clear
waters with sections called The two sources of the Moldau, with two flutes portraying the brooks that form the river; Woods; Hunt; Peasant wedding
that features native dance ditties; the folklore-rich Moonlight; Nymphs rounddance; the forceful Rapids of St. John; culminating in The Moldau flows
broadly onwards; Vysehrad, a triumphant ending depicting the Vysehrad, a rock-fortress that stands as the symbol of the Czech nation.

Though The Moldau was not as well-received as the other tone poems when it was first performed, it has since become the most popular piece in the cycle.
