PROLOGUE

Electricity has become a part of our daily life. It is somehow cannot be separated from our
activities, cause since we wake up: we turn up the lights, going to bathroom and turning on the
heater, eating breakfast (again we need lightings and rice cooker to cook the rice). Dont forget
there are so many other electronic devices that we use, like television, speaker or sound
system, laptop, and of course our cellphones and smartphones.
So have you ever wonder and curious WHERE DID OUR ELECTRICITY COMES FROM? HOW IT IS
PRODUCED? DONT YOU FEEL GRATEFUL THAT ELECTRICITY CAN REACHED YOUR HOUSE? Cause
there are still many places and people that cant consume electricity.

Electricity Source

we live in semarang town. As you can see in the slide, this is tambak lorok power plant, because
it is the nearest power plant in our place. Baca Peta

Power Plant
Here I have some photograph of Tambak Lorok Power Plant. Actually tambak lorok combined
cycle power plant. It is combination between steam power plant and gas turbine power plant
1. Gas turbine burns fuel.
The gas turbine compresses air and mixes it with fuel that is heated to a very high
temperature. The hot air-fuel mixture moves through the gas turbine blades, making
them spin.
The fast-spinning turbine drives a generator that converts a portion of the spinning
energy into electricity.
2. Heat recovery system captures exhaust.
A Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) captures exhaust heat from the gas turbine
that would otherwise escape through the exhaust stack.
The HRSG creates steam from the gas turbine exhaust heat and delivers it to the steam
turbine.
3. Steam turbine delivers additional electricity.
The steam turbine sends its energy to the generator drive shaft, where it is converted
into additional electricity.
Transmission Line
To transmit electricity from tambak lorok power plant to my house, we need a transmission
system. But before that, we need to step up the voltage.
To step up the voltage, we need a step up transformer. It is located in substation in tambak
lorok. This transformer is stepping up the generator output voltage which is about 6 up to 20 kV
to 150 kV. After leaving the substation, electricity is transmitted through transmission line.
Lets just say that my house electricity is supplied from tambak lorok power plant through
pandean lamper and pudak paying substation. So the transmission line is going to the next two
substations with the same voltage level, that is 150 kV.

Substation + distribution transformer

In Pudak Payung substation, the voltage level is stepped down to the distribution voltage level,
that is 150kV to 20kV by a device called distribution transformer. After passing this distribution
transformer, again the electricity is transmitted by the distribution system. In the distribution
system, there is a step down transformer called CSP Transformer (Completely Self Protected).
This transformer is stepping down the voltage level from 20kV to 220/380 V for domestic usage.

Domestic usage
From this transformer, my house gets the electricity source, but to measure and limit the
power usage, there is a kWh-meter that installed in every house. There are many power level of
electricity, from 450 VA; 900VA, 1300VA; 2200VA; 3500VA; 5500VA; and so on.
