2017 Term 4 Newsletter - Week 3

Upcoming Event!
Water Day:
Water Safety has been a huge focus for our school this Term in Physical Education. It is something that
all should know and improves student wellbeing. When we talk about student wellbeing, we are
discussing their health, safety, confidence and happiness. We will be reinforcing the learning that has
occurred with a Water Day on Thursday 30th November at Wattle Farm Ponds. To drive home Water
Safety, have authentic experiences and improve student wellbeing (safety) in the water, we will have
different activities and lessons run by the Karioitahi Surf Club who have generously donated their time.
These activities run by Karioitahi Surf Club will improve student wellbeing, in particular safety, in the
water as they are lifeguards and are more knowledgeable about the various potential issues that can
occur whilst in the water. By sharing their expertise, the Surf Club are acknowledging that the more
people who know about the potential issues in the water and how to handle them, the safer everyone
becomes. This is to fulfil what the ERO (2016) document states that students can make informed and
responsible decisions (p. 17). By students learning about the potential issues and how to handle them,
they are building their ability to make informed and responsible decisions. This part of the day will be
followed by a swim and sausage sizzle for lunch.

After lunch, there will be sports and teambuilding activities on the Ponds edge where students will
compete in their school houses. These afternoon activities will improve individual student wellbeing
(confidence) as well as collective student wellbeing(confidence & happiness) as all students LEARN
together to overcome the obstacles using problem solving skills in the teambuilding activities. As
students grow in confidence in their ability to overcome these obstacles, their self esteem is built upon
which improves their happiness, and so their wellbeing improves. The day will be concluded with a
school wide water fight.

We are in need of whanau help to make this day safe and successful. If you are able to assist, please

We would love any parents who want to assist in making this as fun as possible for students to come
along. The activities for camp are: fishing, air rifles, fire making, bivouac building, cooking, hiking,
orienteering, canoeing/kayaking, team building, harakeke weaving, archery.

We recognise that you may have expertise in any of these areas, and would love your help as the ERO
(2016) document discusses how important it is to build relationships with whanua and how the use of
those relationships allows schools [to] gain access to a wider range of resources (p. 26). We know that
having your help will benefit your child and their learning so please contact Rick OShea if you are
available to contribute your time and/or expertise:

intense. Please remember to SLIP, SLOP, SLAP, and WRAP!
