1. Monsters Can Mosey

ISBN: 978-1404883208
Grade Level: 1-4
Olson, Gillia M., and Ivica Stevanovic. Monsters Can Mosey: Understanding Shades of
Meaning. North Mankato, MN: Picture Window , a Capstone Imprint, 2014. Print.

Frankie needs to create his own monster walk. She wants to create a walk that
is unique. Frankies mom demonstrates dierent ways to walk like a monster. Frankie
also observes how a zombie walks, how a mermen walks, how a ghost walks, and
other related creatures. The ultimate goal of the book is to demonstrate shades of
meaning and synonyms.

I would use this book in a 2nd grade classroom to teach shades of meaning.
The CCSS that fits for this book is 2.5.b (Distinguish shades of meaning among closely
related verbs). I would read the book to the class to demonstrate there are many ways
to same similar actions. I would follow the read aloud with a writing activity to ensure
my students applied the concept in their writing.

2. Lexie the Word Wrangler

ISBN: 978-0399169571

Grade Level: K-3

Slyke, Rebecca Van, and Jessie Hartland. Lexie, the Word Wrangler. New York, NY:
Nancy Paulsen, 2017. Print.

Lexie is a cowboy living in the west. She is the best wrangler on the ranch and in
the whole state of Mississippi. On the ranch Lexie wrangles baby letters (baby cows) to
create words. She then herds the words into sentences. Baby letters go missing from
words and Lexie is determined to find out who stole them.

Out of all the books I looked at, this one was my favorite. I loved the concept of
the book and how it created a fun way to create words. I would use this book in a 2nd
or 3rd grade classroom. In both grades I can use this book for decoding and blending.
If I was to use this book in a 2nd grade classroom I would emphasize on the two words
that combine to make one word. I would follow the book with an activity of creating
new words out of two smaller words (portmanteau). CCSS for 2nd grade is phonics
and word recognition. 3. Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills
in decoding words both in isolation and in text.

3. Punctuation Celebration

ISBN: 978-0805079739

Grade Level: 1-4

Bruno, Elsa Knight., and Jenny Whitehead. Punctuation Celebration. New York: Henry
Holt, 2012. Print.

The book makes punctuation come alive. The punctuation marks act as though
they are characters in the story. The marks go through dierent scenarios through the
town to emphasize what their job is in a sentence. For example the commas slow
down a train to demonstrate how commas are used.

This book is great for teaching punctuation for 1st graders. I would read this
book and followed by a writing activity. I would first make sure all my students were
able to distinguish the dierence between each punctuation mark. Then I would use
writing workshop to assess if students were able to apply correct punctuation into their
sentences. The CCSS for 1st grade, Print concept 1.a.

4. Rumpelstiltskin

ISBN: 9780525442653

Grade Level: K-3

Zelinsky, Paul O. Rumpelstiltskin. Boston, MA: National Braille, 2006. Print.

This story is a classic, originally written by Brothers Grimm. Rumpelstiltskin is

depicted as a magical little man. He meets a woman who wants to marry the King. Yet,
she must spin gold forever. Rumpelstiltskin makes a deal with the woman. She must
promise her first child to him. The woman soon regrets her decision. Rumpelstiltskin
gives her the chance to guess his name in order for her to keep the child.

I would use this book in a 2nd grade classroom to teach key ideas of the story. I
would also use it to describe the characters. The characters in the book are very
important and each of them has certain qualities that create their character. This story
is also good for teaching fairytales and fables. There are many language standards that
could fit with this book. CCSS for 2nd grade that I would use are, 3. Describe how
characters in a story respond to major events and challenges, and 6. Acknowledge
dierences in the points of view of characters, including by speaking in a dierent
voice for each character when reading dialogue aloud.

5. The Vowel Family: A Tale of Lost Letters

ISBN: 978-0822579823

Grade Level: K-2

Walker, Sally M. The Vowel Family. Minnesopolis: Carolrhoda, 2008. Print.

This book is about a couple, Pam and Sam, who have no vowels in their name,
Pm Sm. When they decide to have children the couple adds vowels to their names.
The story starts with all the vowels missing, but the vowels begin to come back and are
fully present at the end. When reading the book it can be a little confusing at the
beginning. This is because the vowels are missing until the end. Once you read it a few
times it makes more sense.

I would use this book in a 1st grade classroom. I would read the book and then
create games and activities around vowels, short and long. Although, there are more
shot vowels than long ones. I could have the students make a list of the number of
short vowels vs. long. I could also use this book in a kindergarten classroom as well.
The CCSS for kindergarten and 1st grade is phonological awareness. K, 2.d, 2.e, 3.a,
3.b. 1st grade, 2.a, 2.b, 2.c, 3.b, 3.c, 3.d.

grade as well. In 2nd grade I would do a similar lesson as in 1st grade but more
advanced. In 3rd grade I would have the students read on their own about the solar
system. I would provide them with this text to read. There is a range of CCSS that can
fit with this text. For 1st and 2nd grade I can use this text for craft and structure, (Ask
and answer questions to help determine or clarify the meaning of words and phrases in
a text.) In a 3rd grade classroom after I had my students read on their own, I would
have them write their own informational text about solar systems. This fits in with
CCSS, 2. write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and
information clearly.

This informational text is about how volcanoes work. The book goes through the
process of how a volcano erupts. The book also displaces places where volcanoes are
located and hot spots. The book is filled with fun facts and realistic photos. The book
has a good layout and graphics.

I would use this book in a 2nd grade classroom to demonstrate the

understanding of the key details in the text. The who, what, when, where, what, and
how. Volcanoes are only in certain parts of the world and are set o by eruptions. I
would follow the lesson with a science experiment with eruptions. The Common Core

Bishop, Nic. Forest Explorer: A Life-size Field Guide. New York: Scholastic, 2004. Print.

The book is filled with beautiful photos that depicts a forest. The pictures zoom
into the animals and insects that live within the forest. The pictures are oversized in
order to zoom into the life inside the forest. The book has small paragraphs with fun
facts to describe the pictures. The book also highlights vocabulary words to study. The
index is filled with pictures to go with each word.

I loved this information text because of the images. I would defiantly use this
book in a 1st grade classroom. I would have my students focus on the images more
than the text. I would so a picture walk through first. I would have my students identify
the wildlife on each page. I would create a class KWL chart. Then I would go back
through and read all the text. Lastly, I would discuss with my students what they
learned, completing the chart. CCSS 6, 7.

ISBN: 978-0756690779

Grade Level: 3-7

Lindsay, William, and Harry Taylor. Eyewitness Prehistoric Life. New York: DK Pub.,

The book has great visuals of fossils, animals and plants that lived during the
prehistoric time. For each picture there is a descriptive paragraph, with fun facts and
vocabulary words. The index is extensive and good for locating specific information.
The book is very extensive and should be used for advanced readers.

I would use this book in older grades, because it is very extensive. In a 3rd
grade classroom I would use this text for various functions. I would have my students
reference this book to create a project about biomes. I would have my students create
a visual of a specific biome. I would have them use this text to reference what their
biome may have been like in prehistoric time. The students would also write a
descriptive paragraph using vocabulary from the text. I could also use the text to
create a unit on fossils. CCSS 2,3,4.
