AGATHA CHRISTIE

Hi to everybody!

Well, as you can see, Im going to talk about a very famous British crime writer,
she is the author of more than 80 books and short stories, and she also wrote 6
romantic books and 24 plays. Her name is Agatha Christie.

Firstly Im going to talk a little about her life, and later about her career and
books.

She was born in 1890 in Torquay, a seaside village of Devon, at the south of
England. With the real name Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller. She was the youngest
of three, her sister Margaret 11 years older than her, and her brother Louis 10
years older than Agatha.
Her father died when she was eleven years old, leaving her family in ruins, but
in fact she always said that she had had a very happy childhood.

Later, during the First World War, she worked like a voluntary nurse at a hospital
in Torquay, and also at a hospital pharmacy, which later influenced her job,
because many of the murders in her books were made with poisons.

On Christmas Eve 1914 Agatha married with Archibald Christie, an aviator of

the British Army, and the couple had a daughter, Rosalind Hicks, the only
daughter of Agatha Christie. It was then, when she adopted the surname of her
husband, and started to call her Agatha Christie.

During this marriage she wrote her first novel, called The Mysterious affair at
Styles, which was published in 1920, and five books more.
In 1922, she published her second book, and she started to travel with her
husband, who was contracted for the promotion of the British Empire
Exhibition, leaving their daughter with Agathas mother and sister, so they
travelled to South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii.

Later in 1926, Agatha's husband, Archie, said her that he was in love with
another woman, Nancy Neele, and wanted a divorce. One night they had a
discussion and Archibald left their house to spend the weekend with his
mistress. That same evening Agatha disappeared from her home, leaving behind
her a letter for her secretary saying that she was going to Yorkshire. Her
disappearance caused a great commotion between public opinion and her
admirers, because the gossips were saying that it was her husband who had
killed her. But not, because eleven days later, she was identified as a guest at the
Old Swan Hotel, where she was registered Mrs. Teresa Neele, the surname of
her husbands mistress.
In 1930, Agatha married the archaeologist Max Mallowan after know him in an
archaeological dig. This marriage was especially happy during the rest of her life
until Agatha's death in 1976.

From 1971 to 1974, Agathas health began to fail but she continued writing, and
two years later, in 1976 a strong flu was enough to finish with the life of one of
the most important writers of all times, when she was 85, she dead in her own
house in Oxfordshire.

HER MAIN CHARACTERS

The most popular characters of Agathas books are Hercule Poirot and Miss
Marple.
Hercule Poirot is a Belgian detective with a special personality. He was
introduced in her first novel, The Mysterious affair of Styles in 1920. Its a
man with a special personality and a little ego-centric, but very intelligent a
good solving crimes. This character appears in 33 of her books, and in a lot of
her short stories.
Miss Marple is her other important character, she was introduced in the short
story The Tuesday Night Club in 1927, and she appears in 11 books of
Agatha Christie. This character was based on women like Agathas grandmother.
Its an old woman with a delicate appearance and a very dear (entraable)
aspect, but in the inside is a very intelligent person and very good judging the
worst side of human nature.

With Hercule Poirot she was very influenced by Arthur Conan Doyle, the author
of Sherlock Holmes, because Agatha liked read the books of Doyle, so Poirot is
very similar to Sherlock.

Well., and finally I must say that Agatha Christie is considered by the
Guinness Book of World Records as the best-selling novelist of all times, her
novels have sold near of 4 billion copies around the world and her books have
been translated to at least 103 languages, and her books are the third most
published after William Shakespeare and the Bible. And of course, a lot of films
are based in her books, so we are talking about a very important author in the
literature.

Well thats all; she was Agatha Christie, and thanks for your attention.
