to be close behind: To follow immediately after is to


be or to follow close behind someone else.
blinding light: A blinding light is a light that is so
bright that it hurts your eyes
clasped: When hands are clasped, they are securely
held. Usually we describe two people as clasping their
hands.
spark: A spark is a little re or a little electricity.
heaven: Some religions believe that there is a place
human beings go after they die, where they are per-
fectly happy. They call this imaginary place heaven.
In many languages, the word for heaven is the same as
the word for sky.
hell: Some religions believe that there is a place hu-
man beings go after they die, where they are punished
for bad behavior or for not believing in the special god
of that religion. They call this imaginary place hell.

enter heaven through a gate made of white stone
to illuminate: To illuminate something is to light it
up.
soul: Some people believe human beings have a soul,
a spirit that is not physical and is their essential iden-
tity.
embarks: To get on a ship or plane is to embark. To
embark is also to start a trip.
Catholic school: A school run by Roman Catholics.
Roman Catholicism is the largest Christian sect (a sect
is a religious group).
vicious: evil, bad
Roman rule: Roman government in ancient times,
from about the year 50 to about 476.
knuckles: bones at the back of your hand where the
ngers start
bruised: Your body is bruised if it is hit and there is a
mark that stays for a long time
to hold your tongue: To remain silent even when
you want to talk is to hold your tongue.
worn down: If clothing or shoes are worn for a long
time, they wear out. If the shoes sole is partly gone, it
has worn down.
