Theme: My Five Senses (hearing)

Do You Hear What I Hear?

Objective: The children will explore their sense of hearing and understand how hearing helps us
learn about our world.
Pre-K Standard(s): A (4) In Kindergarten, students observe and describe the natural world
using their five senses. Students do science as inquiry in order to develop and enrich their
abilities to understand scientific concepts and processes. Students develop vocabulary through
their experiences investigating properties of common objects, earth materials, and organisms.

What to Do:
Note: This lesson requires advance preparation.
Prior to the day of the lesson: For each of the materials (dirt, rice, etc.), fill two containers half
way full. Identify the containers with a symbol to remember what the material contains. After
filling the containers half way, seal them with hot glue.
Materials needed:
-Glue gun
-Containers
-Pictures of materials used
-Small poster
- Plastic spoons
- Rice
- Sand/dirt
- Dry pasta (macaroni noodles)

For the lesson:

1. Students will visualize an interesting sound they have heard before.
2. After discussing their ideas, distribute one of the prefilled container to one student.
3. Tell the student to keep the containers close and give them time to explore the container.
4. Have him/her shake his/her container and challenge the student to find the picture with
the right picture that indicated what is in the container.
5. Assist the student while the student is exploring his/her container.
6. Provide the student enough time to place his/her container in the right picture.
7. Continue until all the students have gone.

Guiding Student Inquiry

Explain how you know what is in the box if you cannot see it.
Describe the sound that is coming from the container.
Describe the differences in sounds the different containers are making.
Explain how hearing can help you learn about the world.

Check for Childrens Understanding (5 questions)

Explain the different sounds?
Explain how they used their sense of hearing to explore and learn about the different
sounds?
Explain how their hearing can help them learn about the world?
Explain why hearing is important?
Explain something new they learned today.

Anticipated Modifications:
Place pictures on the paper (of the items in the plates) to provide extra help for the
student.
Make sure to provide enough time for students to explore.
Make sure to thoroughly explain how to use their hearing skills to guess what is in the
containers.

ELL Strategy used:

Visualization- In response to a teacher prompt, students visualize in their mind (tell

students to turn on the TV in their minds)
