The principle of applying an inhomogeneous, anisotropic magnetic field gradient force with permanent
magnets is well-known in physics, e.g., Stern-Gerlach experiment, which exploits the interaction of a
particles magnetic moment with the aligned electron spins of magnetic domains in nearby inhomogeneous
magnets. A spiral magnetic stator utilizes the same principle and can accelerate a properly magnetized rotor
through 90% of its cycle with only permanent magnets, so it is ripe for research. In this report, the
inhomogeneous change in the magnetic field B is in polar coordinates, where the resulting force F depends
equally on the magnetic moment, the cosine of the angle between the magnetic moment and the field
gradient. The corresponding radial or axial magnetic field, depending on the mode, increases in strength (in
the attractive mode) or decreases in strength (in the repulsive mode) as the rotor turns through one complete
cycle. Magnetic switching is the primary focus of research to advance this invention into a radial design.
