Definition of Terms

1. Abrasion- The wearing away of a surface in service by mechanical action, such

as rubbing, scraping or erosion.
2. Abrasion Machine-This machine has been developed for determining the
resistance to abrasion/wear of natural stones and concrete products.
3. Aggregates-A material or structure formed from a mass of fragments or particles
loosely compacted together. (Oxford,2013)
4. Cement- Any substance as a preparation of glue, red lead, or lime, the hardening
of which causes objects between which it is applied to adhere firmly.
(Websters,2006)
5. Compressive Strength-the maximum compressive stress that under
gradually applied load a given solid material will sustain without
fracture (Merriam-Webster,2014)
6. Concrete- a hardened mass; especially, one of sand and gravel or broken stone
united by hydraulic cement (Websters,2006)
7. Conventional Concrete
8. Curing- Any method of treating for preservation. (Oxford,2015)
9. Density-Compactness; the closeness of any space distribution (The Engineering
Toolbox,2011)
10. Fineness Modulus-A means of evaluating sand and gravel deposits, consisting of
passing samples through standardized sets of sieves, accumulating percentages
retained, dividing by 100, and comparing the resultant fineness-modulus number
to various specification requirements.(Mindat,2014)
11. Lightweight Aggregates-One of several materials used to decrease the unit
weight of concrete, thereby reducing the structural load and the cost of the
building.
12. Specific Gravity- The ratio of the mass of the body to that of an equal volume of
some standard substance, water in the case of solids and liquids, and air or
hydrogen in the case of gases.(Websters,2006)
13. Slump Test-a test to determine the relative water content of concrete, depending
on the loss in height (slump) of a sample obtained from a cone-shaped mould.
(Collins,2008)
14. Universal Testing Machine-include electromechanical series and industrial series
to perform static testing, including tensile and compression
applications.(Instron,2016)
15. Water-Cement Ratio- The ratio between two substance that can be in terms of
weight,volume,etc.(Webters,2006)
16. Workability- the ability of a substance on how easily it can be changed into a new
shape. (Mechanical Engineering Org,2011)
